Youtube is crashing Brave again. Just started happening today. Same as:
And previous iterations of the same. v1.47.186 (yes, yes I know, but it shouldn’t crash out completely just on visiting a URL).
Something to do with the ad-block component, I believe? (I thought I’d stopped that updating so it couldn’t happen again! Argh).
I’d rather put up with ads than a crashing browser. @fanboynz Possible to work your magic again mate?
@BobT36 unfortunately since you’re using such an outdated version of the browser I’m not sure there’s a ton we can do for you here. You can perform some tests to determine that it’s the browser itself and not any installed extensions or “bad data” stuck somewhere.
First thing to try would be to launch a Guest profile window (Menu --> More tools --> Guest profile), close your original profile window, then see if visiting youtube crashes the browser when using the Guest profile.
It crashes on Guest, too. It’s something to do with the Brave Adblock “Component”.
It’s happened a few times in the past. Fanboyz describes the fix, here:
Unfortunately getting a new PC / OS (will be moving to Linux in future) isn’t feasible right now. As mentioned happy to end up with ads due to it being an old version, but it would be good if it wouldn’t outright crash immediately on visiting anything with a Youtube link (including embedded ones!)
Yep! This was the behaviour in the past, too. It just instant crashes to desktop, no error or anything. Even browsing another web page with an embedded vid, or even google (if a Youtube vid is shown) kills it.
Even adding an exclusion rule did nothing.
The only thing that changed / fixed it was updating the Brave ad Block list component. Some sort of incompatibility in the rules for that component, as Fanboyz mentioned.
Same here. Running iMAC OS 10.13 which I know is old. I appreciate Brave being available but youtube is crashing completely today. Won’t even open. Tried reinstalling. The adblock has been a godsend until today. Can’t buy new computer right now. Appreciate any ideas.
Thankyou! Any instructions on how to turn it off so it stops happening in future would be great, too (if possible).
Most of us would probably be happy with no adblock (on this old W7 version), if it means no browser crash!
To clarify, you’re saying that disabling Shields on Youtube.com does not resolve the issue? I’m a bit confused as in your last reply you asked
But if disabling Shields for Youtube doesn’t help then it’s not clear on what you’re asking here. To make sure we’re on the same page – lets try a test:
Launch the browser, then go to Menu --> More tools --> Add profile to create an additional profile.
In this profile, go to Settings --> Shields and toggle all these options “off” or set them to “Allow all” – this disables Shields (Brave’s built-in ad blocker) protections for all sites you visit.
Yep! Still crashes. Even with all Settings > Shields options switched off. This behaviour wasn’t limited to just me, same with the previous times the exact same thing happened.
By “prevent it happening in future”, I mean stop the Brave Ad Block list component updating in future, since the problem seems to be in the ad block rules. (Which I also don’t understand how those are even being called, if Shields are switched off, but eh, that’s what happens!).
That’s fine.
I presume it was the rules that needed updating again in Brave Ad Block Updater?
(Really appreciate this, btw. I know this version is Out of Support, but it’s nice to have a working browser).
Is there any way we can prevent those lists updating on this old version? Or do we just have to put up with it?
(Please document the fix, if so!)
I’d love to but that would mean a whole new PC! (My current one doesn’t support higher than W7). Not possible right now.
I think people are fine with sacrificing features (like adblock) if it doesn’t completely crash to desktop.
Would recommend not enabling Easylist cookie or Annoyances because the quote issue will crash the browser in Windows 7/8. Which was fixed many years ago.
