White flash before rendering new tab screen when opening a new tab

Description of the issue:
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Opening a new tab from an existing tab (the issue happens randomly)

  2. Use windows 11 latest version

  3. Try opening a new tab multiple times when already on an existing tab. May need to try different tabs to get this to happen but it will flash white randomly before displaying the new tab screen.

Expected result: The new tab should open and not have a white flash just before it displays whatever my new tab background is.

Brave Version( check About Brave): 1.86.116

**Additional Information: **
This white flash issue has been happening for years. Sometimes opening a new tab works fine and there’s no white flash before rendering the screen but then the issue comes back.

AKA, the dreaded white flash:

yeah it seems to happen on mobile too

So this might be something Chromium side. In fact, Edge has their own “fix” for this, they call it the “Tab Preloader”, in which case a new tab is always open in RAM, so when you do open a new tab, you never actually see that flash because it just switches to a tab that actually was there, you just couldn’t see it because the new tab was opened in the background already, and the tab hidden until you wanted a new tab.

(That’s a bit of a tongue twister, but I would love to see Brave add a Tab Preloader like Edge, though in dark mode the flash is dark gray for me, but for those in light mode, it absolutely is white. Just don’t do what Edge did, require a group policy to turn it on and off, it’d be nice to see it under Settings > System as a performance option.)

EDIT: Actually, perhaps Chromium does have something sort-of similar under brave://flags?

Only issue is, when enabled, I still get a gray flash (I’m in dark mode, so the flash is dark gray not white for me personally).

I tried this out in brave flags but didn’t seem to do anything. Still flashing white, not gray, and I’m in dark mode

Interesting, ok so you’re in the same dark UI I am, and we see different color flashes.

I’m on an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT GPU, what does yours happen to be? If I recall, when I had a 1080 Ti back in March, I think it did flash white when opening a new tab, now that I think back about the possibility if this was different on a different GPU, but I cannot re-test since my old GPU is stored away in storage.

I have a 4080 super, so nvidia like you used to have. No idea why it would flash a different color because of the GPU.

I also wonder how we can get the brave dev team attention about this because it’s been going on for years.
