Description of the issue:
When I get a phone call while watching a Youtube video in the Brave Browser iOS mobile app, the video’s audio plays over my ringer (at ringer volume, so very loudly) rather than my ringtone, even with Bluetooth headphones in. It’s a bit awkward to suddenly have a video blasting over my speakers at max volume.
How can this issue be reproduced?
Watch a video on Youtube’s mobile website in the Brave Browser iOS mobile app and receive an incoming phone call.
Expected result:
I would expect that, when I receive a call while watching a video, the video would pause and I would hear my ringtone, not the video audio, over the ringer speakers.
Brave Version:
1.85 (116)
Mobile Device details:
Apple iPhone 16e (MD0E4LL/A)
iOS version 26.1 (23B85)
Carrier - Visible by Verizon
Additional Information:
I’ve had this issue even after updating both the app and my iOS version.
Just tested on my end and the media playing stopped when the call came through. Tried with two different iPhones.
Does this occur only in Brave? Would you be willing to test this by:
- Launching Youtube (or any other site that you can stream media in) in another browser other than Brave and see if the same thing occurs?
- Launching an app that plays media (like Spotify for example) and streaming something and seeing if incoming calls have the same behavior in that case?
Mattches,
First of all, thank you for testing this out. Secondly, your alias is clever and I like it, lol.
After some more testing, I found exactly the scenario in which the issue occurs - I apologize for not fully understanding what caused it. I need to explain how to do it first.
I make use of what you may call a bug, but I think should be a feature - the ability to continue playing a YouTube video while the screen is off. When locking the screen while playing a YouTube video, it pauses. However, if you quickly press play on the media controller on the lock screen, it will allow the video to play, and you can shut the screen off. I would love to see this become a regular feature and not a tricky work-around, but that’s not the point of this post.
To replicate the issue from my initial post, there are three conditions that must be met:
- You must be playing a video from YouTube’s website in the Brave mobile app. I tested Spotify’s desktop website (mobile website wouldn’t play media because it forces you to get the app for that) on the Brave iOS mobile app and it allows media playing with the screen off and works properly when receiving an incoming call.
- You must be playing the video with the screen off, using my work-around mentioned above. I tested this with Safari, but because it will not allow the trick I used, the issue won’t happen.
- You must be connected to Bluetooth audio (in my instance, earbuds). When listening from the speakers, the issue doesn’t happen.
Please give this another try, and see if you can replicate the bug where it plays the video audio over the ringer when receiving an incoming call. Thanks again for looking into this issue.
Well what you’re describing here is “background play” and this already is a feature of the browser – although Youtube has been trying to stop this feature from being used recently.
We just tested this again and it looks like you’re right – it seems like when the phone is ringing the audio will continue to play, although it’s stopped once the call is answered. I’ll go ahead and file this issue on our Github.
Some of us might call this a feature if it’s spam calls interrupting our jam.
