Hi,
I’m going to switch to Windows 11 and wanted to know the cleanest way to keep my settings, tabs, extensions, passwords, etc.
Is simply copying and pasting the folders in the path, programme, AppData\Local a good idea ?
Thx !

I am by no means saying this is the BEST way, but it is one way that I am aware of…
Using Brave Sync
Create a new (or use your existing) ‘Brave Sync Chain Code’: brave://settings/braveSync/setup
and the thing about Brave Sync, at least as it stands now, is THAT CODE that’s created today, is only applicable for the day.
To re-use it in the future (beyond today), what you have to do is remove the last word, which would be the 25th word in the big, wierd long sentence if you count the words.
So, with that said, I suggest you save words 1 through 24 and omit the 25th word and SAVE them in a Secure Note or Password in your Password Manager again, for future reference.
You then have to REPLACE that 25th word, with the, basically, Word of the Day…
You could create another Profile and create another Sync Chain Code and find out what the Word of the Day is at any time, OR, use this website conveniently made JUST for this purpose (I’ve saved the website too, again convenient!):
From my understanding the reason Brave messes around with the 25th word is that sometimes people would share their code and then have access to other peoples “stuff” so it’s just a Privacy/Security measure.
I’m sure there are other ways that you can do it, that’s just how I’ve done it. Maybe some others have some suggestions for you ![]()
Thank you for your reply, but does it take into account changes to the deep settings ?
Not entirely sure what you mean by “deep settings” / I’m personally not entirely sure how much it takes into account… but here’s what it says it does sync, as long as you select Sync everything, just above, out of eye shot, in the screenshot below from: brave://settings/braveSync/setup.
Again, I believe there are other ways of doing what you want to do, but worst case scenario, this is an option that I am aware of to possibly consider (whether with or instead of whatever else you might find). Other options are beyond me at this time, I haven’t had to do so in a long time.
If you try searching via the advanced search here with filters you might find something useful: https://community.brave.app/search
Doing my own Search I found this:
Just to point out again as my lil emoji
does if you hover over him in my name… I’m just a user trying to help, I’m not a Brave employee/expert.
Hi,
For example, I removed the rewards that consume CPU. Would that be taken into account ?
As I wanted to do at the beginning, copy the folder to local, I don’t know if the folder has become cluttered with useless files over time.
The link you gave me is also interesting.
Thanks for following up.
I’ve gone I think as far as I can with support on this one, so I’m going to tag in @Saoiray , he’s the guy who wrote the book, literally, the link in my above post he wrote “Helpful Info & FAQ”
On a side note, @Saoiray , why’d you hide that awesome helpful thread/topic? (Guys get fed up not using it?)
Started updating things and changing the format. Then got distracted and put it on hold. Unpinned and unlisted until I patch it up again later.
That’s part of the lack of motivation. When it seems like a lot of people aren’t using the resources given to them , you start to question if it’s worth putting in all the time and energy to maintain. It’s just a little volunteer project of sorts
@Alyi there’s no perfect situation to transfer to another device. If you were just simply updating the OS on the same device, everything would stay on it. I know when I updated to Windows 11 from my Windows 10, I didn’t have to worry about doing any backups or anything. Or are you just doing a clean install and trying to wipe the drive first?
Passwords are always good to have synced with another device or to have exported somewhere on the cloud or an external drive just as a backup if things ever go wrong. Simply copying the folders will have the passwords in an encrypted state and unusable if trying to use elsewhere or if the DAPAPI key on Windows changes or gets corrupt.
Bookmarks and most other things get held in the User Data folder. But again, I can’t promise all the “deep settings” are you referenced would transfer. Theoretically it all would, but since I haven’t done it I hesitate to answer with any certainty
Yes, thank you for your help. ![]()
No, I’m going to do a fresh install. I’ve had Windows 10 installed for 5 years.
Are extensions not exportable ?
