Top/bottom bars keep jumping in and out when scrolling/reading

As much as I love Brave, there is one behavior that drives me completely nuts:

When reading articles, I usually scroll a bit, then read, then scroll again, then read, etc.

What Brave does on iOS: Whenever I start scrolling, it hides the top/bottom bars (i.e. the one with URL etc, and the browser tabs control), of course with an animation. When the scrolling stops, the bars come back in, again with an animation.

This results in an extremely irritating behavior, because the thing constantly seems to jump around, and changes its layout and appearance. (Note that this is independent of whether the bar is at the top or bottom, which can be controlled in the settings).

Please, pretty please, just give us an option to permanently keep these bars visible at all times.

Welcome to the Community, I see you haven’t received any response…

I’m a little bit confused as to what you would like from what you’ve shared, I mean I understand your frustration with what you’re sharing but I’m not sure what the result you want is. I also recall experiencing this particular frustration in the past as well (though I was thinking it might have been was with the Apple News app but likely Brave too).

Currently, when I scroll DOWN on any given page the top and bottom bars disappear… they only reappear if I scroll UP.

Is your experience different from mine? and if so (and that’s fair enough, again sorry for the frustration) I’d encourage you to share more info, such as…

What iOS version are you using?

What Brave version are you using?

Have you restarted your phone recently or since the last upgrade of Brave?

Any particular website that gives you trouble or is it every website?

& with my confusion, I’m not sure if you just understand this is how it works or not (and for you it might be different, I don’t mean to be condescending) but if you are more meaning to just provide feedback, I might suggest editing your post and changing the catergory to: Feedback > Browser Feedback

Also, I’m just a user trying to help, I might not have the answer, just trying to help you on your way…

Thanks for your reply!

I think the point is this - you say:

Currently, when I scroll DOWN on any given page the top and bottom bars disappear… they only reappear if I scroll UP.

For me, they reappear as soon as the scrolling stops. And this is exactly what makes it so infuriating, because this of course happens basically all the time…

This happens on all pages, not just a specific one. Potentially, it’s a bug then, the behavior you describe seems more sensible – even if I would still find it distracting and prefer to simply keep the UI elements visible all the time.

iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 26.0.1 (I think), latest Brave from App Store.

Yeah that is strange and annoying, I’m sure I’ve dealt with that before (again whether Brave or elsewhere on my phone), might need to wait until Monday, but I’ll tag in some more experienced folks @Mattches @Saoiray hopefully they can help you out soon  :+1:

Might be some strange brave://flags to deal with :man_shrugging:

@chinch @User.1.000.000.000 this is normal behavior for all web browsers on iOS. You’ll see it happen on Safari, Edge, etc. Content loads from the top of the page and we go down. When scrolling down it minimizes/hides the address bar so we can see content. This happens automatically if you’re going toward the bottom.

If you begin to scroll toward the top (to content you’ve already seen), it assumes you’re wanting to leave the page, so the address bar becomes completely visible again. This only happens if you scroll up.

If you strictly scroll down and stop, it won’t appear. Also, scrolling up isn’t required if you just want the address bar to appear again. Hitting the small area with the link also will make it reappear as well.

Would you mind making a screen recording of this?

I can see it as a feature request. But not sure how likely it would be to get done, especially as it happens on all other browsers (that I tested). This seems to be more of either an upstream thing or maybe even an Apple/iOS limitation.

That’s kinda what I thought @Saoiray , good idea about the screen recording, it’s strange about it happening on stop and not just UP  let’s seeeeeee

Hi guys, appreciate the replies.

I have to correct myself - in fact, it does not happen on every website, only on some. One example is https://www.golem.de - which was when I decided to post here. Maybe there’s something in their JS code which causes this behavior. However, it does not seem to happen in Safari, only in Brave.

Anyway, I may have also just noticed this because I only recently switched to iOS and never noticed anything like that on Android – there, the browser I used simply kept these bars constantly visible, resulting in a much more “stable” view and experience. So I’m still advocating for an option to allow that because even if it’s less dramatic when it doesn’t happen constantly, I still find the behavior irritating in general.

Fair enough, so now that we have that “resolved”, it seems more like a Feature Request, so you might edit your original post and change the category to Brave Feature Requests > iOS Requests …or I suppose you could start a new Topic there but why create a whole new one when you can simply EDIT the existing one

I sometimes get the below options mixed up, so here’s how to best choose (see below but also, Feature Requests have the option to VOTE for them …and don’t forget to vote for your own request, it doesn’t add your own vote automatically… I say this too because, I again, have noticed this annoyance in the past myself, though again on I think more than just Brave, I think Apple Books as well… anyway all this to say is I’d vote for it too if it were possible… though again I think it’s more of an iOS limitation than a Brave limitation so don’t hold your breath, I’m not on this one!)

Okay, so yeah, I see it. I’m wanting to say it’s due to it trying to load more content as we go down, which artificially makes it seem like we scrolled upward. Basically, it’s the javascript they injected. If you enable Block Scripts in Shields you’ll notice it doesn’t happen.

To be clear, you don’t typically want Block Scripts active as it can block content we want to see and break functionality of sites. But just saying it’s something you can do as a test to see an example of how once done it won’t keep showing the top bar.

I don’t see this behavior happening on Safari, Firefox, or Edge though, so I’m not sure where the deviation/regression would be coming from. And it seems disabling Shields or running in Private doesn’t change the behavior.

Let me tag in @Mattches to see if he might have any ideas.

I just tried that website too… wow that website & functionality is a bit nuts, I don’t think I’ve experienced things that badly, but yeah that would drive me nuts too (as I’ve said :winking_face_with_tongue: ), I suppose it’s on a per site basis, @Saoiray is always the best :+1: Let’s see what Mattches has to say

(Sorry I didn’t try it before in my last post  :man_shrugging: )

Yeah we’re seeing this on our end as well but only for that site. Strange that it doesn’t repro in Chrome either. Will take a look into this.
