The "Top Sites" Feature

After 48 sites have been added to Top Sites (either 6x8 or 24x2), clicking the “Add site” menu choice generates a popup with Name and URL fields that can be populated, and the related Save changes button activates after those two fields are properly populated, but no additional URL buttons appear after the Save changes button is clicked. [This pertains to desktop version.]

Description of the issue:
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Add 48 top sites.

  2. Attempt to add a 49th.

Expected result: A new button/icon for the 49th (etc.) site

Brave Version( check About Brave): Brave 1.83.120 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Chromium: 141.0.7390.122

Additional Information: Now, as of 01 NOV, Brave only shows 12 (12x1 or 6x2), with no apparent access to previously added URLs > #12.

Yeah I’m seeing this as well. I don’t think this is an intentional limitation – will reply back here when I have more info.

I’ve opened the following issue for this on our Github:

Yes, I use those, too.

Saoiray, your question made me think about my post. Maybe I should clarify the catalyst for it: This post was to help Brave; it is not about functionality for me, personally.
As is the case with other features, issues with Top Site functionality (and, possibly, unposted/unnecessary limitations [i.e., 48 max]) could dissuade users/customers from selecting Brave as their preferred browser. If someone enjoys the visible, existing feature Top Sites, it seems that in 2025 we are well beyond any technical limitations on the number of URLs that a user/customer can pin, so a block would likely be perceived to be a bug or some other not-yet-ready-for-primetime indicator that could move the user/customer to a competitor’s browser.

@OptimusMaximus I was only asking to understand the reasoning, not to criticize anything. I like to process requests and figure out the logic behind them.

For example, some people want a very large number of favorites Top Sites on the new tab page. Since favorites Top Sites only show there, you must open a new tab first in order to use them. If there are so many that you need to switch between multiple bars, that adds another step.

Bookmarks feel more convenient because you can organize them into folders and reach them from any page. You can also choose whether to open a bookmark in the current tab or a new one. On top of that, autocomplete helps you get to bookmarked sites just by typing a few letters.

So, to me, it makes more sense to keep only a small set of frequently used sites in favorites Top Sites, while putting the rest in Bookmarks for easier access wherever you are.

It’s just interesting to see the use case for most people. From what I’ve seen, many are choosing the harder ways to do things. Anyway, just figured I’d explain the motivation behind asking. Essentially just trying to understand how everyone uses things and why. Also to see if people are aware of the other options which are big quality of life improvements, such as what I mentioned about using Bookmarks instead.

Thank you, Saoiray.
Also, I checked the condition in the last few days. In both the 2x24 and 6x8 modes, the “Add site” feature appears to be active when 48 sites have been added, but after populating the “Add site” popup a 49th tile never appears.

Btw, according to the GitHub shared earlier, It looks like the fix should be arriving in the update containing 1.85, give or take. Currently we’re on 1.84

I have 1.85 (1.85.116) and Brave still will not load any additional sites.

Should I be seeing the functionality now or, in light of “give or take” does it appear to you to now be slated for a future release?

Thanks.

@OptimusMaximus they had it slated to be uplifted to 1.85 but it looks like they decided not to do that. Instead they have it arriving at 1.86. https://github.com/brave/brave-core/pull/32377#pullrequestreview-3479642920

OK. Thank you for the prompt reply!
