The search bar does not send directly to the site

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue:
After yesterday’s update, when I search the bar on my iOS phone or tablet for a site that is in my history or bookmarks, when I select it, that site is searched and I don’t go directly to the site.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. In the search bar, search for a site present in your bookmarks or history
  2. Press enter
  3. The site will be searched in your default search engine and you will not be sent directly to the site

Expected result:
I expect as before the update that when I select the site I go directly to the site and not to the search engine.

**Brave Version( check About Brave): 1.70 (131)

Mobile Device details
iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 18.0.1

I have this same issue.

If for example I enter community.brave.com in the address bar, the browser does a Google search with search term community.brave.com instead of taking me directly to https://community.brave.app

How are more people not complaining about this.

I visit about 10 urls. They autocomplete in the address bar, but still send me to a search.

The inefficiency of having to scroll through search results for a url that autocompleted is frustrating.

I’ve been wondering about the same thing too.

The mobile browser is unusable for me at the moment as this frustrates me so much.

This issue is somehow related to Sync.

I installed the latest beta from Testflight and before connecting to Sync every URL worked normally.

I didn’t change any settings and joined my Sync chain, after that the same URLs I typed went to Google again instead of going to the website directly.

What could be the culprit here? Why does this happen?

@Saoiray

Hi, I’m more than happy try any solutions, if you have to possibility to investigate or forward this ticket to a resolving team.

I am experiencing the issue without sync. I don’t have sync enabled.

I note it only happens on iOS. Android works as normal, does not redirect autocomple domains to a search.

I tried switching search providers. It is not provider specific. Happens on Google and DuckDuckGo similarly.

In my case it seems that the problem is related to bookmarks. In fact, if the site I enter in the search bar is in the bookmarks it is searched on the search engine, if it is not present I arrive directly on the site. I did a test by modifying the URL of a bookmark and it worked, while the address that previously worked is now searched in the search engine. I also confirm that the problem is only on iOS.

Excellent find. I forgot about bookmarks, haven’t used them since the early days when they were more prominent. Like you, modifying the url or deleting the bookmark resolved it for me.

Probably also accounts for the behavior with sync. Sync probably added the bookmarks.

@Devilhunter and @Avu3 I just tried replicating but not really having the issue on my iPhone 13 Pro Max using same version of Brave as you mentioned in original post.

When I saw mention of bookmarks, I tested with that and originally thought I could replicate, but it only did it for one website that had changed its URL. All other bookmarks from Desktop Bookmarks or Mobile Bookmarks would go directly to the site. So like if I had brave.com as a bookmark and typed in b or br to get it to generate brave.com, then hitting GO on my keyboard would actually visit the site.

All that said, is this happening for you all in everything or it is only certain sites?

This was a great find!

I deleted all the bookmarks I have on the phone, then it is working fine again. Initially I thought the issue is either with search settings or with synced history, but it seems to be with synced bookmarks.

While I’m happy that we found the cause, it is not really convenient not be able to have bookmarks.

In my case all the sites saved as bookmarks.
This morning I did this test:

  1. In the search bar I wrote “com” which was completed as https://community.brave.app/, I pressed enter on the keyboard and I landed directly on the site. This site is not present in my bookmarks but is present as history.

  2. Once on the site I added it as a bookmark directly from the brave menu (3 dots → Add bookmarks)

  3. I changed site and tried point 1 again, but this time instead of going to the site it was searched in the search engine.

If I try to click the favorite instead it works, as well as selecting it from the list that it offers me while I am writing the site, for example those that have the “book” icon (for bookmarks) or the “clock” icon (for history).

@Mattches just wanted to tag you in to see if you can replicate or have any advice on the issue as reported by everyone.

Unable to reproduce on my end on my iPad. I’ve forwarded this thread to the iOS team to review and see if they can reproduce.

Can I have anyone here encountering this issue please confirm the device type (iPhone, iPad, etc) as well as the iOS version they’re using when the issue occurs?

I’ve opened this issue for the developers to review and will add new information as it comes in:

I was just going to suggest getting peoples iOS versions as 18.1 just came out yesterday.
You just mentioned it, I just thought I’d point it out for everyone
(NOT to be confused with 18.0.1 which came out earlier in the month).

The problem is present on these two devices:
iPhone 14 Pro Max
iPad Pro 13 M4
Brave: 1.70 (131)

The issue was present on both iOS 18.0.1 and the latest 18.1. This issue has been occurring since the latest version of Brave before which was working fine.

and actually it’s happening to me too I just realized/checked…

So here are my details:

iPhone 12 Pro Max
iOS Brave Version: 1.70
iOS: 18.1

haha as I just mentioned, though I think it was happening on the previous version 18.0.1 as well, I just didn’t clue into it before… it was weird, I first kinda noticed it as I had something in DuckDuckGo browser and did the “Open in Brave” iOS Shortcut, and instead of opening whatever it was to that particular website - I THINK it was a random news article and NOT part of my bookmarks/history/sync chain (though maybe it was :man_shrugging: ) - it sent it to search - I thought it was just an error with the shortcut feature but… strange stuff! :man_shrugging:

And to be clear, I do also currently have bookmarks and history (everything) on it also setup with Brave Sync.

For me the versions are:

iOS: 18.0.1
Brave stable: 1.70 (131)
Brave beta: 1.72.(90)

Device: iPhone 13 Pro Max
