Dear Brave Support Team,
I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out to request your assistance in recovering my Brave browser sync chain after recently performing a full system format on my laptop to address performance issues.
Unfortunately, during the format, I lost my sync chain data. Based on guidance I found online, I attempted to recover it by installing an older standalone version of Brave (2020), inputting my sync code, and then updating to the latest version. I also tried Brave Nightly, hoping for better results. However, both versions display the error message:2025-07-28T18:30:00Z
“Sync is disabled by your administrator.”
This message persists across versions, even though my device is personally owned and not managed by any organization or administrator. I’ve verified this by checking brave://policy
, which shows no active policies in place.
Could you please advise on how to bypass or resolve this restriction and proceed with sync recovery?
I’d be happy to provide any additional details, screenshots, or system information needed to assist with troubleshooting.
Thank you in advance for your time and support.
PS- I have my 24 word phrase sync code Best regards,
Subham T
Hello - This is a very old version of Brave. Are you able to install the latest version? If so, do you see the same error?

Yes, I get the same error in newer version as well. A colleague of mine recommended to install the old version and sync data and updating it after the sync completes.
What do you see under brave://policy?
Can you uninstall fully and reinstall the latest version of Brave?
Please provide a screenshot of what you see on the latest version. Thanks!

I see “no policies set” under brave://policy and when im enabling it through "show policies with no value set then a lot policies are visible but with status as not set. This is what I’m able to see on the latest version of Brave,
I’ve removed the image, but it looks like you previously deleted the Sync chain.

You cannot recover your Sync chain once it has been deleted. You can learn more here: https://support.brave.app/hc/en-us/articles/12944495986957-Delete-Sync-Account-FAQ

but I have not done it intentionally, there must be a way around to get it back.
@subhellspawn007 did you not read what they linked you to? One of the questions there with an answer is:
Can I recover my Sync account after I delete it?
No - you cannot recover your Sync chain once it has been deleted. This deletion is permanent and you will need to create a new Sync chain and have one of your devices re-upload the data.
Once you have told it to delete, it purges from the system. Brave no longer has the data saved. If they had a way to reverse that, it wouldn’t be very private or secure. If you didn’t choose to delete, it’s possible it automatically deleted after a year or more of inactivity as well. Regardless, it would not be recoverable.
Thanks, sir. Sorry for wasting your precious time. I’m not that tech-savvy and this was a severe loss on my side hence I acted delusional ignoring the fact they presented.
