Removed Extension Still Drops Cookies?

Description of the issue: Removed extension is still dropping cookies that cannot be deleted
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Installed Audio Capture from web store on https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/chrome-audio-capture/kfokdmfpdnokpmpbjhjbcabgligoelgp

  2. After using, for what I needed, I removed it.

  3. Regardless of removal, the cookies still appear as per attached upon reload, browser restart, it chronically reappears.

Expected result: Extension removal = no more cookie drops

Brave Version( check About Brave): 1.82.172

Additional Information: Even went through the entire ./config file for BraveBrowser, stripping sessions and tabs and seeking the persistent extension to no avail. It’s not there, but it’s still dropping cookies.

Thank you for the help!

Thank you for the detailed report. Can you please share the exact distro you’re using as well as whether you installed via curl commands from our website or from Flatpak/Snap/etc.?

Additionally, you’ve confirmed that there are no remaining traces of the extension anywhere on your PC (not just in your Brave User Data folder)?

Thank you for the reply!

I am using Debian 10 and installed it via aptitude after adding the repository (I used curl for the keyring as per instructions).

I searched my entire hard drive for extension remnants without luck. Even manually browsed /opt, /etc, /usr

I tried reporting the extension as “unremoveable”, but apparently that doesn’t violate Chrome Webstore’s TOS

Cheers!

If there are no traces anywhere on your PC and you’ve confirmed it’s fully removed from Brave then I have no idea why that cookie is still listed in the browser. Let me do some digging on this and I’ll get back to you

Any luck?

I just tried uninstalling and re-installing Brave and guess what? The cookie still pops up

Can you confirm that it’s not installed on any other browser on your machine?

Nope! Tried it once and only on Brave.

@Radio let me also confirm, are you saying the extension shows as removed? It’s not visible anywhere?

And if you create a new browser profile, it doesn’t appear there either?

Same question to Chrome and/or Edge if you happen to have either or could grab one just for testing. I’m trying to think if a JSON is surviving or something.

Otherwise, I take it that we’re saying the extension is indeed completely gone but you’re just seeing the cookie entry?

I guess one more thing, if you install Brave Beta or Brave Nightly, does it do it there as well or is it just tied to normal Release/Stable version of Brave?

Hi,

So I deleted my entire Brave-Browser folder under config in /home/$user and that cured it. That wasn’t removed in the uninstall.

I went through it line-by-line, deleting stuff and it still was there until I just removed the entire thing. Actually, I renamed it and put it on a different partition so if this suceeded, I could do a comparison at a later date and find what and where the extension leaves rubbish.

By the by, would be really handy to be able to export settings like we can bookmarks and passwords for restoring later.

Cheers!
