Recovery key not accepted on fresh install - had to start from scratch!

So what is the actual official ‘backup feature’. Password are encrypted on per device, so copying your Profile folder does not work. Only Sync is able to do it.

When you update your browser, it will include the new 25 word Sync code and will not require the instructions above as the code will be 25 words by default. The only reason this occurred is because the two devices being used were on different versions of the browser, where one did not have the updated Sync code in it.

Technically there isn’t a full “backup” feature. Yes you can use Sync to some extent and much of your data will carry over when you copy your user data folder. For Passwords and bookmarks, you can export these manually and import those files into your new installation.

@Mattches - just installed Brave on a Linux distro and it told be something akin to getting another sync code (i.e. the one on Windows). Both are the latest versions.

@danielson,
I’m not sure I understand — can you please elaborate for me?

Dual booting situation Windows/Linux.
First installed on Windows with new code yesterday.
Then installed Brave on Linux but at trying to sync with same code, get this message:
“This code has expired. Please generate a new one on your other device and try again.”

@danielson ,
if you are applying the sync code during the day - it should work fine.

I know that Windows and Linux store time in different ways: Windows consider the BIOS time as a local time; and Linux considers BIOS time as a UTC time and then adjust the time zone to show the local time.

Brave Sync uses the UTC time to calculate the time to live for the code. But if there happens mess with the time zones and the local time and it goes beyond the day, then the problem is possible.

So my only advice is:

  1. Ensure the local time and local timezone is correct on the 1st OS, copy the sync code;
  2. Reboot to the 2nd OS, and ensure the time were synchronized correctly, if not - adjust manually the time and the timezone;
  3. Apply the Brave Sync code into the 2nd device.

Thanks

Set Windows to RealTimeIsUniversal.
Made new code while in Linux.
Went back to Windows and key was accepted without doing any copy/pasting.
Back in Linux, no bookmarks were synced.
So, this is far from over for me.

But for now, will wait until Brave administration gets this straight.

Either sync works fully and permanently (like Firefox, Vivaldi, Edge and Slimjet) or not .
With email account or with key - whichever.

In the meantime, back to Firefox and Vivaldi who have proven themselves quite a bit over the years as reliable in this area.

Did want to add a special thank you @Alexey and @Mattches for trying to help iron out this issue. :wink:

all my data… gone…
My password manager only had a few of my passwords, but the rest were stored here…

I just lost my all bookmarks. I formatted my windows. Now I can’t get my data back. Since, sync not accepting. And asking for new sync code from old device. Which I don’t have.

This is truly an idiotic decision. Because it used to work before. I will be leaving Brave browser today. So, annoying.

Thank you.

Guys is there a way someone to help me get my sync account back.
Because when im type my code its saying: This code was generated by a deprecated version of Brave, please upgrade your other device first
is there a way to get it back?

Sync codes are now 25 words. Post #12 above explains and outlines various steps you can take. Hope it works for you. Take care.

That’s the part i don’t understand.
Just not geeky enough i guess.

Why Brave can’t simply sync passwords and bookmarks (and extensions) like Vivaldi, Edge, Firefox and Slimjet is beyond me. Especially since that is Brave’s claims in the options. No ifs and buts.

If it can’t be straightforward enough for me.
Don’t bother doing it, 'cause i aint gonna promote Brave to some elderly.

If there’s anything good from this experience…

Now heading over to BitWarden for password manager and Diigo for bookmarks.

Extensions have always been a touchy thing.
With Mozilla’s changes that left out a bunch of handy Firefox extensions back in the day…
Must keep extensions to a minimum.
Compatibility issues are less and easier to remember which one i liked and used.

So, even if thread is “unsolved” it has taught me some precious lessons.

Oof, yeah I’m not super fond of this. I keep my sync key on local storage as a text file I copy and paste from. There’s absolutely a benefit to a static, universal sync key.

Glad to hear i’m not the only weird one around here!

Btw, welcome to Brave’s Community forum! :wink:

Hi @danielson , @Smonge ,

as an option now it is possible to use online-tool to see what is the 25th sync word

https://alexeybarabash.github.io/25th-brave-sync-word/

but this ability may not work in future releases.

Thanks

A little sprinkle of sweetness over the cake?

Will this statement be formalized on Brave’s website so that users beware?
Or will it be limited to the few curious who casually visit this forum?

Probably not. It’s hard to get them to put anything on https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us

It’s enough to actually have things kept updated. It used to show the dates they last modified the articles but they stopped that after may hadn’t been touched since 2020. They have recently updated some information, but you’ll encounter outdated stuff if you search long or hard enough.

I mean, there’s things like https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/6449369961741-How-do-I-manage-Ad-Block-filters-in-Brave- that they created on May 24, 2022 but then never actually put any content to it. Speaking of, @Evan123 do you know who handles that? Kind of curious if that is ever going to be added. Would be especially awesome if it can tell us what the filters are. I mean, no clue what ABP X Files, CJX’s Annoynace List, YousList, and all the others do. I’ve been waiting for a description of the filters for what seems like forever now.

Of course, https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/360026648512-How-do-I-opt-in-to-Brave-Ads- also has its own little outdated things. Like on the iOS portion it makes it sound like you can earn tokens, but that’s no longer the case. Of course, that help article hasn’t been updated since April 14, 2019 according to the site.

How do I opt-in to Brave Ads_ – Brave Help Center - Brave 8_26_2022 6_02_52 PM

Sorry, starting to ramble. But yeah, chances of things appearing in the Help Center always seems pretty slim. It would be nice to get more static info, but doesn’t happen for some reason.

Looks like you’ve been in and out and about here for quite a while.
A rant? Well, if you had been back in the day, on Mozillazine’s forum, you would have probably been kicked out in no time just for saying “boo!”

Guess it’s all a question of priorities…
Don’t know whose in charge of documentation dept. and i’m sure that whoever is there must have his/her hands full. Especially if the boss needs to give an okay to every comma.

@Alexey took time to offer a lending hand (appreciated) and we take it or leave it.

hmm? I pop in all over to try to help and answer questions. You asked if it would be formalized on the website, to which I answered it likely won’t.

Then I gave you examples, while also tagging in someone from Brave so they can pass it along. Hopefully getting at least those couple things resolved. Two birds, one stone.

Been using Brave since 2020 and bounced around on support. Have to say Mozillazine doesn’t ring any bells for me. Doubt would have been kicked or any issues. Lot of what I do is to help people and Brave. Many things usually done through emails and “behind the scenes” but do stay pretty active all around.

Yep, didn’t say bad on that. Just said chances of someone putting that into a more permanent resource like the site is pretty slim, especially since they mentioned may not work in future releases.
