Random videos not displaying while playing in Facebook and Youtube

Description of the issue: on Facebook and Youtube, random videos will not display (audio runs, but only black background) or video hangs while audio continues to play

Exact URL of the website in question: on facebook it’s random. for youtube, one example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsAoLMcaLJI&list=RDHsAoLMcaLJI&start_radio=1 shields up or down, it shows like 1 second of video then it goes black. plays fine in chrome and firefox.

Did the issue present with default Shields settings? Yes

Does the site function as expected when Shields are turned off? No

Is there a specific Shields configuration that causes the site to break? If so, tell us that configuration. (yes/no): not that I’ve found

Does the site work as expected when using Chrome? Yes

Brave version (check About Brave): Brave 1.91.172 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Just tested this and the video you shared seems to be working on my end on Win 11 and macOS systems. This smells a bit like an extension issue to me – can you try disabling any extensions you have installed in the browser and test to see if that resolves the issue?

I honestly don’t believe I have any extensions installed, but I will check when I get back to the office.

okay, I have 3 extensions, which I disabled and replayed the vid. same response. Extensions are: Foxit PDF Creator v12.1.0.0, Cisco Webex extension v2.0.4, and QR Code Reader v1.0.2

Create AN ADDITIONAL Brave Browser user Profile (Menu --> More tools --> Add profile); and, when creating:

  • Make no appearance adjustments other than to set user profile color at brave://settings/manageProfile.
  • Do not import anything.
  • Do not add any extensions.
  • Do not make any adjustments to content filtering at brave://settings/shields/filters.
  • Do not allow/enable any Brave Browser “bells and whistles” such as Brave Rewards, Brave Talk, etc.

After you create that new user profile, Exit / Quit everything and restart the computer … and then choose the new user profile for testing.

made new profile and rebooted, selecting the new profile on starting brave. basically the same result, first play of the video after the above routine, made it two seconds in before the screen stopped and just jittered while the audio kept playing. every random youtube video after that just come up black screen while audio continued.

Definitely looks like graphics acceleration – @cfosburg can you try going to Settings > System and toggle off Use graphics acceleration when available (in your main/original profile) and see if this makes any difference in the performance?
