Question about updating Brave Shields filter lists

uBlock Origin is explicitly telling its users to not update uBO’s filter lists manually:

  • Starting uBO 1.54: the most important default lists update automatically every 5 hours

    • To take advantage of these quicker updates, do NOT update manually unless absolutely necessary.

    • :double_exclamation_mark: Manual updates push back automatic updates :double_exclamation_mark:

      • A manually updated list will need to wait its whole long cycle before it can resume getting short cycle updates.

I was wondering if this mechanism also applies to Brave Shields filter lists because I don’t know the frequency of how often Brave is updating its filter lists.

So when YouTube is breaking with fake buffering or other breakages, my first step would be to update my filter lists because maybe there has been a new update pushed for this.

Lists are updated hourly, no need to manually update. But manual updates won’t cause issues, goes through our own servers

I’d leave the normal automatic updates alone unless something is actively broken. For a YouTube breakage, a one-off manual update in brave://components for the Brave Ad Block Updater is still a reasonable first check, but doing it repeatedly usually just makes troubleshooting noisier.

That makes sense. Automatic updates should be sufficient for normal use. A manual update is best treated as a one-time troubleshooting step when something is actively broken (such as a new YouTube issue), rather than something to do routinely.
