It is too easy to delete a profile by mistake when you have too many of them, there are threads in the forum already from people who has made this mistake. I want to propose that Brave gives a clear warning when you delete a profile stating that all data will be lost, including bookmarks and the name of the profile being deleted in bold letters.
The warning you get when you go to delete a profile is pretty clear as it is – not only do you see the name of the profile in big bold letters, it also shows you an enlarged icon/avatar image of the profile so it’s clear which profile you’re about to delete.
It also lists how much of some of the more relevant data you might be deleting while telling you directly that This will permanently delete your browsing dat from this device:
Not sure how much more clear it can be.
I appreciate you taking the time to reply and adding a screenshot @Mattches
I am attaching a screenshot too of what it looks like at my end when you have multiple profiles. The screenshot you posted, viewable after choosing delete, is very informative but I don´t read any of that when I delete a profile I simply read the username and look at the profile logo, sure it is my fault for not paying attention but I found a couple more posts in the forum of people accidentally deleting their profile, it indicates I am not the only idiot in town.
I am going to suggest a couple of improvements for those of us who are slow, the first improvement would be not to make all the profile avatars look like circles and have a triangle or square available too to better identify the profile, and the second idea is to have a slide bar or checkbox that stops a user from deleting a profile without removing that checkbox or slide box first, this could be used to secure the main profile.
Different profile icons are something I believe we are working on for future releases – I will try to dig up the Github issue for that.
For the rest, I don’t think this is very likely to be changed. It would be one thing if the profile got deleted right away when you first click Delete but that’s not the case.
When you view your profiles, then actively click on the overflow icon, then Delete, you’re shown a screen that confirms:
- Confirmation asking if you want to delete that profile and it’s associated data (at the top)
- A warning message saying that it will permanently delete that data from your device (right below the confirmation)
- The specific Profile name and icon you’re deleting
- All the relevant data that will be deleted along with it
Then you’re required to click Delete again. That is more than enough of a stopgap on our our end to help prevent users from accidentally deleting the wrong profile (or deleting one at all). We’re basically saying (after you click the first delete button) “Take a look at this profile one more time – are you sure you want to do this?” – we cannot be responsible for you saying “yes” to that. That doesn’t mean it will never happen, as we cannot account for every user action/error that may come up – no one can. I would recommend just trying to be more careful to on-screen prompts and menus when performing actions like this.
