Oh I wish I had known about that!

That is really interesting. I have no idea why that would interfere with Tor, but nice find.

apparently that’s not the whole issue, cuz I’ve had Tor tabs not working despite turning this off months ago

It does not prevent the problem from occurring, but it allows you to recover by restarting brave.

I’m sorry that’s happened to you. I used Tor recently and it worked. I am just lucky because i used non Linux instruction advice. Thanks for that brilliant poster. I know how frustrating programs can be. Everyone else can get something but “What about me?” I"ve been there. I hope you fix it.

I encountered the same issue on Windows 11 (Brave version: 1.31.91) and managed to solve it by turning off the automatic proxy detection in the windows settings:

  1. Open Brave and navigate to Additional Settings → System
  2. Click on “Open your computer’s proxy settings” (Windows proxy settings are opened)
  3. Turn off the automatic proxy settings detection
  4. Restart Brave
  5. Open a new private window with Tor
  6. Tor starts initializing - et voilà! :upside_down_face:

I solved my issue by closing all Tor windows, deleting the contents of .config/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/tor/data and then starting a Tor window again.

Tor was getting stuck at “Bootstrapping 0%” otherwise.
