Popup ads bypassing Shields even with Aggressive mode (Android)

Hi,

I have a problem on Brave mobile. On some sites, if I click anywhere on the page, it opens a new tab and takes me to a random bad site. I have Shields set to Aggressive and I also added custom filters, but it still happens.

I think it is not a normal ad. It looks like the site uses some script to open the popup, so normal filters don’t stop it.

Does anyone know a fix for this? Or a better filter list I can use?

Description of the issue: On some sites, clicking anywhere on the page opens a new tab or redirects me to a random ad site. Normal ad blocking doesn’t stop it

Did the issue present with default Shields settings? : yes

Does the site function as expected when Shields are turned off? : yes with tons of ads

Is there a specific Shields configuration that causes the site to break? If so, tell us that configuration. (yes/no): no

Does the site work as expected when using Chrome? Yes with ads and popup issue

I’ve informed the team about this and someone should be able to take a look soon.

Worth noting that sites like these (anime/movie streaming sites) are notoriously good at bypassing ad-blockers. They use scripts, invisible overlays and fake “play” buttons (among other things) to work around ad-blockers. They also rotate domains and change/update their scripts frequently to make it even harder to detect.

Thanks for looking into this! Just wanted to add — I tried Firefox with uBlock Origin on the same site, and it blocks these popups. So it does seem possible to catch them, just not with Brave’s current Shields setup.
