Opus give empty replies on 1.98.60

I’m on 1.98.60 on Void Linux (because my auto-upgrade script detected that as the latest stable release because it’s marked here as latest: https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/latest even though it’s not here: https://brave.com/latest/). I am asking Opus for a bash script, no page contents shared with it. It simply thinks for a while and then returns a completely empty response (I can even edit it as if it were a normal response).

At some point I got half a response back, but then it started responding with empty bodies again.

@Tritonio

As a test … Try a more crisp, request (leave out “I guess” and anything else you can). I reduced the length of my request to only the following, because of the Brave Search (Answer with AI) character string limitation:

Need a bash script - takes a directory, scans it recursively for archives, rar zip and tar.* and tgz tbz2 7z etc. Detects archive volumes too. Extracts all of them. Uses the “rar” command for rars, 7z for 7z, unzip for zips and tar for everything else.

I tested that with Brave Search (Answer with AI), and its response:

#!/bin/bash

# Check if directory argument is provided
if [ -z "$1" ]; then
    echo "Usage: $0 <directory>"
    exit 1
fi

TARGET_DIR="$1"

if [ ! -d "$TARGET_DIR" ]; then
    echo "Error: '$TARGET_DIR' is not a valid directory."
    exit 1
fi

# Function to extract a single archive
extract_archive() {
    local file="$1"
    local dir=$(dirname "$file")
    local base=$(basename "$file")

    echo "Processing: $file"

    case "$base" in
        *.rar)
            if command -v rar &> /dev/null; then
                # rar handles split volumes (part1.rar, part2.rar) automatically
                rar x "$file" "$dir/"
            else
                echo "Warning: 'rar' command not found. Skipping $file."
            fi
            ;;
        *.7z)
            if command -v 7z &> /dev/null; then
                # 7z handles split volumes (.7z.001, etc.) automatically
                7z x "$file" -o"$dir/"

How the request is written should not matter, the LLM would still respond to it in some way other than an empty body.

Not sure what is wrong. I tried to get a raw data log with brave://net-export/ but https://netlog-viewer.appspot.com/ is down so I cannot properly analyze the log. I passed it through “jq .” to prettify it and all I can say is I saw nothing but HTTP 200s in it.

I downgraded to 1.97.57 and it behaves the same way there too.

FWIW I tried it with this prompt too, no difference, still getting an empty body answer. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

@Tritonio

OK! Does that silly OPUS respond to: “How many OPI does it take to screw in a light bulb?” ( ← Proof of life, test ? )

I tried GLM (TEE) and it just thunk forever. GPT gave me a generic error about Leo. Grok behaved like Opus, empty body.

Oh … it must still be October.

This is still broken in 1.98.63 on Void Linux. I suspect that the model DOES reply and the reply reaches my browser because the title of the conversation DOES get automatically set to something relevant, so at least that much arrives. But the answer itself is not shown.
