I appreciate that this seems to be a repeating issue, but it’s the same effect every time. OneNote WAS working great. I cleared out my cache and history (it was half a GB! Time to go!) and now OneNote webclipper just flashes up and down and never logs in, even though I AM logged into Microsoft on another tab, and on the desktop OneNote. Yes, I can highlight, copy and paste into OneNote by hand, but it’s tedious, and for some things simply doesn’t work (trying to not clip garbage I don’t need but getting the whole article instead of a truncated version). Can you please figure out what it is that causes Brave to despise OneNote every few months? Maybe you could create a fix that can be pinned for us to go through every time this happens (or, if it works, clip it to OneNote for future reference!) I turned off shields on Onenote.com, nope, didn’t work. I removed and reloaded Onenote. Worked ONCE, then went back to the flashing. I can’t keep removing and reinstalling it every time I want to use it, and I use it a LOT.
C’mon guys. This is a brilliant browser I recommend all over the place, but academics, writers and others use OneNote all the time. This is a dealbreaker for them. It has to work.
**How can this issue be reproduced?
**
Try and clip anything to OneNote in Brave. Might work the first time, after that… it just keeps rolling up and down and doesn’t let you log in. I can’t upload a video showing it doing its dance because your page says ‘Sorry, new users can’t upload attachments’.
So I’m assuming we’re referring to the OneNote Web Clipper extension. I have to assume because nobody has actually explicitly stated that that was the case. Nor has anyone shared the steps to reproduce the issue, their Brave version or any of the information that was provided in the template for users to fill out so that they can receive the best assistance – I see one person stated they’re using Windows 10.
I would love it if someone can tell me the exact version of Brave they’re using, what OS version they’re using, the exact extension they’re using (or app), and the specific behavior they’re seeing when they try to use the web clipper.
For me personally, I installed the OneNote WC extension in Brave, signed into my MS account in the extension and was able to clip sites without any issue. I did notice that it appears to take a good amount of time the first couple of times I tried – longer that I expect it should, but it did work successfully. And now it seems to work pretty quickly for whatever reason:
I did state both Win 10 and Brave v1.83.118 (Oct 15, 2025)
I also stated that after the first install, when it worked, it flicked up and down without letting me in. I can’t reinstall every time I need it, so I’m stuck. Here it is, doing its dance. Occasionally, I manage to hit the sign in, but the that page springs up (see video), then vanishes again. I did track it down and installed the CRX file in case there was a problem. Still the same.
@shaz just a heads up, it’s late on Friday night. Chances are we won’t hear back from Mattches or the others until after Monday.
From what I can see, this is an issue with the extension itself. Some example posts referencing Chrome and Edge with this same or similar issues are below:
If you don’t mind doing some further testing and confirmation, I am curious about:
If you create a new browser profile, does it do it there? Try installing just the OneNote extension and not the others at first. I’m kind of wanting to test the idea of a clean slate to see if it makes a difference. If no issues, then would suggest adding your other extensions one at a time to see if notice the issue happening again.
Assuming not resolved in #1, then would also like to ask if disabling Shields has any impact?
If none of the above, then also to have you check if the issue also occurs on Chrome?
Thank you for responding. It DOES work in privacy mode. Not really quicker than highlighting, copying, creating a new page on the desktop version of OneNote, and pasting (which is what I’ve been doing for months now), but I don’t understand why it works in a private window and not in the normal one. Same extensions, same everything, just nothing recorded. What’s changed?
Interesting side effect, now it’s been opened in the private page, it’s opening on a standard page. What the heck? So all I have to do now is every time it does its dance, open a private tab, load it up, then close the tab and off we go? Quicker than reinstalling, at least! Thanks!
Would still like to know why this trick works, though!
@shaz did you change the settings to allow it to run in a private window? Extensions are usually blocked there unless you enable the toggle in each extension’s settings.
A private or incognito window is different from a regular session because it starts without cookies and most extensions are disabled.
When something works only in private mode, it usually points to a cookie issue or interference from another extension. Based on what you said, I can’t tell which one it might be. That’s assuming you meant a private window and not a guest profile.
If you truly meant private mode and have allowed the extension to run there, then one of the other extensions that is blocked in private mode could be the cause.
Otherwise, it’s likely a cookie problem. Using private mode gives you a “clean slate,” so the login works there while it fails in the normal window due to a bad cookie session. Once the extension gets that login done, it continues to work…at least for the rest of your browsing session. But no idea what happens after you exit Brave.
I didn’t change the settings. I opened a private window and OneNote was there (but none of the others, which is weird. Why OneNote but not the others?) I put my computer into sleep mode at night, I don’t turn it off. The only time it gets turned off is when we have a powercut or when Windows updates (which won’t be happening as often now, given I’m on Win 10)
@shaz just to double check what I was saying about it being allowed to run in private. Go to your extensions menu which is brave://extensions/
While there it will list all extensions you have installed. If you hit Details you’ll see some options you have. One of them will be the toggle I’m talking about. I’m going to assume that OneNote is enabled. I would think you did it at some point but it might have been in settings or something as you brought over the CRX.
You should see something similar. Not a big deal but I’m more curious to make sure it was toggled on. Because if it’s not then something else odd might be happening, especially if it’s running from Brave.
@ldkuch sorry to hear you’re having this issue. Would you mind please opening your own thread in Browser Support > Desktop Support and providing as much information as possible so we can assist you?
