News: Old news articles shown again with new date stamps creating impression articles were just posted

Something really annoying about Brave News is the reposting of old articles with a new date stamp. Just opened an article that showed “2 hours ago” yet the article was actually posted on the relevant site more than a month ago.

This is happening more and more where I keep on seeing articles with new date stamps yet I know I’ve seen or read these specific articles weeks ago.

Changing the date stamp on old news articles do not make it new news, please stop doing this, it’s super annoying and it makes the whole news feed pretty pointless if most articles are old stuff.

@RustyNomad any examples? I just went through everything in my Brave News area and I didn’t see that.

Also am curious if you’re seeing one of those types of articles where they provide updates, so you’re seeing the update with the newest info. Even though originally published sooner, they have new content added and it’s now “new” enough to show.

Biggest thing to remember is Brave News is just an RSS feed. So as those sites send out content, it shows. It’s not that Brave is the one inserting everything.

One specific one I know I saw about three times was the one with Olivia Munn who’s mom also had cancer…… Know I saw this one on different days easily about 4 to 5 days apart and always with a very recent posting tag. Last one I saw had a tag of ‘2 hours ago’ yet when you click on it you find the article was posted more than a month ago.

I initially thought it might be because of a different news provider posting the same story but it was the same news provider so it was a repost of the same article.

Going to be browsing the news again over next couple of hours. Will come back to post anything else I find.

Hardly started and I already have the first one. This article shows a tag of ‘2 hours ago’ yet I have seen this article more than twice over the course of the past week. Clicked and yes, article was posted on July 26th.

Next one not even 10 articles further. Again, tagged 2 hours ago yet article was posted on August 6th. See both are from Healthline……

@RustyNomad

  • I’m trying to look. So I added Healthline just to see. The articles that showed up for me are below.

  • And clicking on them does seem like the articles are a bit older.

What I’m not sure of is whether it’s just their RSS feed perhaps sending things out that way? I’m wanting to say it’s not Brave. Other sources seem to be fine. For example:

Sorry for another post, something else I noticed, look at the times on these three posts which followed on each other - 2 days, 3 hours, 5 days.

Think this might also have had something to do with it. Should articles not stay in a chronological order? If I scroll down I expect to see the articles in chronological order and not all mixed up here and there.

@Mattches might you be able to confirm what to look at or consider here?

I think that we’re working on a sort feature for News – will have to find that issue. As for the rest, these articles are often updated after their publish date, which may cause them to show up in the feed again.

Had a look just now and found a whole section repeated 4 times. The section below appeared 4 times in my feed and they were not that far apart. First though ti might be from different sections or news outlets but it’s under the exact same heading each time.

@Mattches Would be great if there’s an option to sort everything by date/time. Guess the ‘updated’ articles will still be picked up more than once but doubt whether there is any solution for this. Luckily they are in the minority at this stage.

@RustyNomad looking into this with the team. To confirm, you’re saying that those three articles appeared in a row like that four different times?

@RustyNomad can you also confirm what OS/version number you’re using when you see this?
