Well, it’s doing it again… the suspended tabs are getting blanks, need manual restoring. Also, it started duplicating some tabs. And it doesn’t seem to load some extensions on startup, like ‘Disable HTML5 Autoplay’, and any of the tab suspending extensions I’ve tried.
This is getting to be a complete mess… I think I need to migrate from this trainwreck to somewhere… not sure if it’s Chromium related, or Brave issues, but I can’t use it this way anymore.
Update: This will keep happening whenever you close the browser. It’s an absolute mess.
Thankfully IckyrisARL workaround works as a charm. Though this just makes me want to migrate to another browser. (Was gonna say “better”, but honestly the devs have nothing to do with this when it’s most likely google’s fault)
Weird, tabs do completely disappear for me, but since i have the extension save every hour, i can check directly the amount of tabs that disappeared between hours and then restore those. Granted, it’s not the most intuitive, that’s for sure.
For anyone here encountering this issue, as I asked before, I need to know whether or not you had Sync enabled when the tab groups were lost. We have this issue open that is exactly what’s being described here but it is caused specifically by Sync being enabled:
There may be more than one issue at play here, but I first need to sort out which issues are affecting which users.
I have several profiles that I use daily, and have only noticed this happen on one of them. All have Sync Everything set, and that’s not changed in a long time.
I reported above that I had experienced all my tab groups missing in one profile when I opened Brave. Yesterday I noticed that one of several tab groups in that same profile had all of its tabs showing the New Tab Page. I don’t know when this happened, and they were all recoverable by pressing the Back button.
Unfortunately for this particular issue, information gathering is the best I can do here, and I do need a good amount of it. Right now, it appears as though for anyone who is encountering this, their tab groups “just disappear”. In order to make sure this issue actually gets resolved, we need as much information as possible to determine the cause.
The issue we’re trying to solve is why some users tab groups disappear(ed). Whether or not you’ve already provided this information in this (or another) thread already please provide it again as it would be extremely helpful to know the following:
Does this issue reproduce consistently? That is, are you able to close the browser or perform some action that consistently causes your tab groups to disappear? If so, please share the steps you take to reproduce the issue.
At the time the tab groups disappeared, did you have Sync enabled? If so, do you still have it enabled now?
At the time the tab groups disappeared, were you using vertical or horizontal tabs?
Do you have any extensions installed int eh browser at this time? If so, can you please share which ones?
Do you have any flags enabled in the browser (brave://flags)? If so, which ones?
What version of the browser were you using when this occurred?
Did/Does the browser generate any crash reports when the issue occurred/s? If so, sharing the crash report IDs would be helpful.
I will be opening an issue for this shortly but it would be helpful to our devs to have the above information up front.

It’s only happened once.
At the time the tab groups disappeared, did you have Sync enabled? If so, do you still have it enabled now?
Yes, yes.
At the time the tab groups disappeared, were you using vertical or horizontal tabs?
Vertical
Do you have any extensions installed in the browser at this time? If so, can you please share which ones?
At the time the tab groups disappeared, did you have Sync enabled?
No
Do you have any extensions installed int eh browser at this time?
Allow Right-Click, Get cookies.txt, KeePassXC, MetaMask, Return YT Dislikes, ShortsBlocker, SponsorBlock, Über simple bookmark count
Do you have any flags enabled in the browser (brave://flags )?
I never changed anything. Should be the default
What version of the browser were you using when this occurred?
1.75.175
Did/Does the browser generate any crash reports when the issue occurred/s?
No idea, since I just noticed it and I have no idea when it happened
On a side note:
I now downgraded the browser, deleted all but the oldest session file and now have most of my tabs back. Some are still missing though, but much better than before.
Does this issue reproduce consistently? That is, are you able to close the browser or perform some action that consistently causes your tab groups to disappear? If so, please share the steps you take to reproduce the issue.
Unknown. I have not used Brave since I do not want to pollute my tab history or have something overwritten - in the off chance that I may be able to recover my tab groups.
At the time the tab groups disappeared, did you have Sync enabled? If so, do you still have it enabled now?
Sync data only for Bookmarks.
At the time the tab groups disappeared, were you using vertical or horizontal tabs?
Horizontal.
Do you have any extensions installed in the browser at this time? If so, can you please share which ones?
No extensions.
Do you have any flags enabled in the browser (brave://flags)? If so, which ones?
I’m running all Default. There are some flags that are default Enabled, however.
What version of the browser were you using when this occurred?
1.75.175
Did/Does the browser generate any crash reports when the issue occurred/s? If so, sharing the crash report IDs would be helpful.
No - However, if they are in a folder somewhere, please give the location.
EDIT: Good Grief! I’ve been stuck using Edge and the sheer amount of ads make me nauseous. The Internet is completely UN-useable. Please bring Brave back (with my tab groups intact!!!)!!!
Edit 2:
Two other important notes about this bug:
On a Windows 11 machine in my home I also use Brave. That browser had two tab groups and a handful of tabs. One group was closed, the other open. No tabs or groups were removed.
My Brave did not automatically update, as I am on Linux where I decide when to update not Microsoft or Apple.
It hasn’t happened again on 1.74.x, but for the time being I also don’t consider updating Brave to a newer version anyways until this is fixed, or a simpler workaround has been discovered.
I’d like to clarify, we at Brave did NOT introduce a new feature or something like that which caused this problem. The tab groups code is at the heart of Chromium and this issue should be affecting other Chromium browsers also.
It’s definitely possible we (at Brave) made a mistake when upgrading Chromium versions - from 132 => 133 for example. I participated in that code review along with 133 => 134 and didn’t see anything on our side which can cause this. We make our changes on top of Chromium and if there was a bad patch (sometimes the upgrade has conflicts between Brave and Chromium) then that could be the culprit. The other possibility would be a bug in Chromium.
In either case, the information shared here helps us narrow it down. Thanks again for helping provide that.
If you run into this problem: the first solution I would offer is try pressing Ctrl + Shift + T. On macOS, I think this is Apple + Shift + T. This should restore the last closed tab or Window. You can also use the Hamburger menu (the three horizontal lines — in top right of Brave) and pick History and you should see the recently closed tabs / windows.
While it is noteworthy that earlier versions of Brave (ex: 1.74) did not have this bug, I would NOT recommend downgrading. Each Chromium upgrade that happens, there are versioned files in your profile (like sqlite databases) which get upgraded and may break if downgraded. Downgrading the Chromium version for a profile is unexpected behavior and you risk losing data.
One thing I am curious about: folks that run into this. Does it happen more than once? I did notice in recent changes to tab groups in Chromium that there has been a migration. I believe the tabs are stored differently now. For example, the groups will show under bookmarks toolbar. Once a person goes from Chromium 132 or earlier (Brave version 1.74 or earlier) to Chromium 133 (Brave version 1.75) they shouldn’t encounter this again.
