ok so I love using brave browser (currently im on V.1.92.143), but when i started taking things more serious with my Gf she would come over all the time and use my mac to work and do whatever on while i play my ps5 and so i decided to make her a profile for brave so she could have all her accounts and such on there. The thing is every time she opens a new tab it either shows her custom background image with no ad’s on the new tab page, or it shows a stock image of whatever (it constantly changes) with a big ad in the middle and on the bottom left. The only things that stay the same when it does this are the two sites she added, and the brave trackers thing in the upper right hand corner of the new tab page. Now everything ive read online and spoke to chat gpt about said to click on the customize icon in the bottom left and within the little settings window that pops up, and under the background image section that i have to scroll to the bottom and turn off Show Sponsored Images, except that when i scroll down i dont see any toggle for doing so and its really bothering her that it keeps doing this for every other tab she opens and so i was wondering if there were any settings we were missing to stop it from doing all this and actually allow us to disable the ads on the new tab page (* oh and ive attached images to show the issue and help anyone thats able to assist see the problem)
According to Brave Search (Answer with AI):
This inconsistency occurs because Sponsored Images are enabled, causing the browser to overlay ads or promotional elements on top of your chosen background or rotating images. To resolve this, you must explicitly disable sponsored content in the New Tab Page settings.
Steps to Fix:
-
Open a New Tab in your separate Brave profile.
-
Click the Customize button located in the bottom-right corner of the page.
-
In the Customize Dashboard, locate the Background Image section.
-
Scroll to the bottom and toggle off the option labeled Show Sponsored Images.
Disabling this toggle ensures that your custom background remains static and free of advertisements or promotional overlays. If you still encounter issues, verify that Show Background Images is toggled on (to display your custom image) and that you have selected Use your own as the background source.

PS1: “Is Brave Rewards enabled on your girlfriend’s profile? If so, is it also enabled on your own profile, and do both profiles show the same New Tab customization options?”
PS2. The current Brave Browser stable release version is 1.93.129
@AntiHappy999 yes that is correct – you’ll need to disable Show new tab page ads and you should see the option here:
But you’re saying that you don’t see this option here, is that correct? Do you have Brave Rewards enabled at this time?
“Show Sponsored Images” being absent from that screen is a feature of Brave Origin, isn’t it?
If so, maybe the OP enabled Brave Origin right after creating the new profile, where “Show Sponsored Images” would have been enabled. (Because it is enabled by default, IIRC.)
So as @yellowfinch actually suggests – are you using Brave Origin here or are you just using the standard Brave version?
