"New Private Window with TOR" not working

@mk7z

I’m not sure why the updater works this way, but after hitting Relaunch it should then display the latest version on the About page.

The tor process (referring to tor window in Brave) should be visible in the Activity Monitor just like any other process:

@mattches Thanks, but if it wasn’t clear, I have to Relaunch twice to get to the current version.
For some reason, the updater doesn’t necessarily choose the most current version when updating.

‘About’ is displaying the version that was d/l’d. The current version at the time I updated was .73 (not .71).

@mk7z,
So what you’re describing seems a lot like the following issue:

However, the fix for this was pushed into the latest release (v1.23.73). You’re still having this same issue after updatig?

@Mattches

You’re still having this same issue after updatig?

I hadn’t updated to .73 from .71 but I believe @mlchatnoir had and though he originally thought it had fixed the issue, earlier today he wrote that TOR was broken again.

The TOR window issue I’m having is that a connection is never established. In the Github post you cited it appears to have only been temporary (i.e., until a TOR circuit was established).

i have no knowledge about mac os but is there any built in firewall or some security setting that could block the tor relay on brave

@justsomeone1 None that I know of. If there were it would have been affecting the TOR window feature all along, wouldn’t it?

The current problem is new. TOR window just stopped working. The error message on the main page (before I even try to load a URL) says TOR status: “Disconnected.”

(Only in the Release version. It’s ok in the Beta.)

@mlchatnoir Have you managed to get this working?

Never had this problem before just now and I am using the newest version

I am experiencing the same issue on the Windows version V1.23.75 (Apr 28, 2021), and I had experienced the same with the previous version. I was using. As with the OP, the Brave with Tor window had been working fine, then just all of a sudden it stopped. It disconnects and won’t reconnect again, even closing the entire program won’t get a window to reconnect.

@mattches Has this issue been fixed in the Release version?

I’ve been using Beta since the TOR window stopped working in Release but would like to get back to the latter, which has all my ‘pick up where you left off’ windows and tabs.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could copy a ‘windows & tabs’ config from one Brave version to another?

@mk7z,
The fix for this should be riding the trains now – hopefully should be available in the next browser update.

i found this one

Thanks @justsomeone1, what does it mean to “turn off private windows with Tor”?

I don’t think of TOR windows as being turned on or off, just opened or closed.

Closing a TOR window that won’t load and then trying to open one again doesn’t change anything for me.

The fix for this should be riding the trains now – hopefully should be available in the next browser update.

Thanks @Mattches, how those trains doin’?

(Translation: has that Release version update since occurred?)

it said at the end that you can solve it by this till they release a fix

If you open brave://settings/extensions, you’ll see this toggle:

In Brave 1.26, when you turn it off, it will delete the Tor data directory.

You can find the release dates on this page:

In Brave 1.26, when you turn it off, it will delete the Tor data directory.

Thanks, @fmarier. Not sure I understand the connection between this ‘temp fix’ and the issue, tho.

Why is deleting the TOR directory necessary at all to be able to ‘open’ a TOR window in Brave?

The underlying issue is most likely a bug in the Tor daemon. It seems to get into a bad state and is unable to establish new connections.

The work-around we have in 1.26 is to give users the ability to clear the internal Tor daemon state. We’ve confirmed that this work-around works for some people who are unable to establish Tor connections in Tor windows.

I’m already updated past the version they recommend updating to (1.25.68). Last night, toggling “new window with tor” off then on worked, but this morning it’s not working again and toggling is doing nothing
