Multiple instances of process Brave-type-renderer-field-trial-handle- using excessive RAM and slow to load pages

Description of the issue:
Excessive time taken to load pages. Seeing ‘connecting to’ ‘waiting for’ and ‘timed out’.
The system monitor showed 29 multiple duplicate processes using 3.5GB in total. (See screenshot.)
On restart normal fast performance was restored. Brave used 0.8GB on restart with 22 instances of the process climbing soon to 1.2GB, and then to 1.5GB in about twenty minutes with 30 instances of the process.

Version 0.62.51 Chromium: 73.0.3683.103 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Linux Mint 18.3 Cinammon 64-bit

Additional Information:
I am computer literate so can follow directions, but not an experienced Linux user.
My computer runs well but it gives a recurring Real Time Clock error which is not solved by renewing the battery on the MB, so a hardware fault is not out of the question.

Thanks for reaching out – excellent write up btw.
So I would imagine that each of those processes are tabs and/or extensions installed running in the background. Can you tell me which/how many extensions you have installed?
Additionally – if you were to open a private browsing session (no history, cache or extensions running this way) and browse normally, would you see performance struggle in the same way?

The intermittent performance problem has resolved itself for the moment.
I do not think the performance problem is Brave specific in fact. It may be due to my cheap and cheerful internet provider, or perhaps due to my h/w or config. What typically happens is that the upload speed stays stable but the download speed is sometimes throttled.
If you can give me a link for advice on network diagnostics it would be appreciated.
I have Twitter Autoload extension installed.
