MS Edge's history for Brave

I like Edge’s history very much. You can pin history button to the toolbar. Instead of going through menus to access history, you open it with one click. Also, it has history, recently closed, search. Very functional.

Would be great to have that.

Edge was the one and only Chromium browser to have a custom Settings/Bookmark Manager/History Manager UI due to how much manpower it takes to rewrite it. Edge replaced it with their own React frontend, which works with Chromium’s backend services from what I understand. They made no attempt to reuse the Polymer (at the time, Chromium now uses Lit).

I have long wondered if there was a reason Microsoft made no attempt to use Chromium’s own and wrote their own entirely, or if it simply came down to their preference on the UI.

The reason I bring this up is that because most Chromium forks don’t really touch it, I’ve often wondered, if it really is hard to modify it to add such features, and maybe that’s why Microsoft rewrote it. Luckily we’re asking for a feature, not a re-write. But I’ve noticed that most forks don’t even add features, just “skin” it and that’s it.

Brave has all of that.

Not an option with Brave but you have keyboard command, such as Ctrl+H you can use to open History, you have hamburger menu, and you can also right click on the back button to choose to view History.

You could also add a bookmark to History, which would give you a one click access from the bookmarks bar.

And that in of itself is a Chromium base feature.

I believe we do plan to add History as an option to be added to the toolbar as well.

There is one thing I wish the History menu did, was show all history, not just the recent tabs. Firefox always shows all the history in the menu.

I know this is a Chromium thing as even Microsoft never bothered to alter, so I’m not sure if or how such a thing could be done, as it’s that one Chromium thing I’m not keen on.

Example here:

(Like in this example, the history menu infers my last history was YouTube, but clearly it was here on this community, and I’d prefer quicker access to true history, not extra clicks.)

If you did implement History in the toolbar, could it perhaps show all history instead of just “Recent tabs”?

(Or is there a setting/flag for this I just simply never found?)

@MasterLink the recent tabs is more about recently closed tabs and all rather than recently visited. For recent visit, right click on the back arrow. (though I forget if that’s cumulative or just for that tab/window)

Right, that’s what I kind of don’t like about Chromium’s method of doing it. The back button only shows for that tab, not all history as a whole.

Firefox does “Recent History” which is what I expect a History menu to offer, as browsers before Chromium did just that, showed all Recent History under one menu, not only Recent Tabs like Chromium does.

(Firefox even has a submenu for recent tabs, which I loved, I could chose.)

Chromium however (like Brave here), just makes “History” mislead, because it’s not, it’s just Recent Tabs and the option to open History in yet another tab (when I would prefer a menu).

But the Google overlords decided no.

I understand this kind of change likely cannot be done, or even made an option because of how deeply rooted in Chromium’s base it truly is That’s the issue, I don’t think it will change or can easily be done.
