Brave preferences is set for preferred browser, but the MacOS systems does not seem to recognize that. Sometimes I am sent to Safari, which is understandable, because a new Mac comes with Safari already set as the preferred browser (Mac and Safari are both within Apple). At other times, I am sent to Google Chrome which formerly was my preferred browser. When in Brave and I open preferences page, that confirms that Brave is the preferred browser. My MacOS is the latest Big Sur operating system, so maybe this is an issue for Apple to resolve.
