I used ‘create shortcut’ to have on my desktop on myfxbook.com but when I opened the shortcut, all my browser data is lost and launches as a new browser, If the old data is lost and I can’t get it back like it was, I only need the bookmarks, if there’s a way to recover it from .config
Brave Version
Version 1.56.20
Hello @penguinlover
go to /home/<username>/.config/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/Default this the location of the default profile replace default with profile you want
there are 2 files Bookmarks.bak and Bookmarks that have your bookmark copy both of them to other folder you can open them by any text editor to make sure they are not empty
if the Bookmarks is empty but the Bookmarks.bak is not then close brave and make sure it not working on the background then rename the Bookmarks to anything and rename Bookmarks.bak to Bookmarks open brave and it will read the old data
for the other data you can search for it’s location on chrome and it still will be the same with little difference
hope that help and have a nice day
I followed the file address you gave me but I can’t find any file named ‘bookmarks’
that strange @penguinlover
do you have any app that clear any data or if you go up on level on the directory do you see any folder named profile 1 or 2 and so on if there are one then look for the bookmark files there also
do you enabled the sync option on brave?
I’m sorry where exactly should I be looking for the profiles? in the Brave-Browser folder?
No I don’t have any app to clear data.
Yes my sync option is enabled.
@penguinlover it’s ok do not be sorry
it should be here /home/<username>/.config/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/
not sure if that effect the disappear of the file or not
so if you do not have any other profile let me know to tag someone from the team to help you with that
but please provide the following info
the linux distro and version you use and if you installed brave using the official repo from here https://brave.com/linux/ or somewhere else
I don’t think I can find profiles here.
I don’t think it’s because of sync cuz I’ve been using it for quite a while with no such issue. This only happened after I tried to create a shortcut to a website like I mentioned earlier.
I use Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon and I install brave through software manager
hi @Mattches could you help us here
his browsers data lost after trying to create shortcut to a website
and the bookmark file not exist on his profile folder
and have a nice day both of you
So there’s no other solution to this?
@penguinlover,
First, to confirm the exact behavior here — you went to https://www.myfxbook.com/, used the Install... option in the main menu? I ask because when I got to this site, I actually do not see the option to install as a desktop shortcut, nor do I see the icon in the address bar that allows me to do this. So if you did this, can you tell me exactly how you saved it to the desktop as a shortcut?
Additionally, since you are using Sync, do the other devices that are on this Sync chain still have all the data on them?
Sorry for the confusion, 3 bars > More tools > Create shortcut is what I did.
speaking of sync… THANK YOU SO MUCH! I found the data I was looking for, The bookmarks, they were saved. That’s all I needed
However we can continue this discussion as we haven’t figured out what caused this in the first place. This might help others
