Is there a way to disable automatic updates?

Brave doesn’t include an option in the interface to permanently disable automatic updates. This is intentional, since updates often include critical security fixes and compatibility improvements.

That said, if you still want to stop them manually, there are system-level methods depending on your operating system:

Windows

You can disable the Brave Update service:

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Brave Update Service (brave or bravem).
  3. Right-click each one, select Properties, and set Startup type to Disabled.
  4. Stop the services if they’re running.

You can also block Brave’s update executables via firewall or by removing update tasks in Task Scheduler under:

Task Scheduler Library > BraveSoftware > Update

So to fully stop automatic updates:

  • Disable both Brave Update (brave) and Brave Update (bravem) services.
  • Delete or disable the two BraveSoftware > Update tasks in Task Scheduler.
  • (Optional) Block outbound connections from update.exe and brave_update.exe in Windows Firewall for extra assurance.
