Improving Night Mode

Dear Brave Team,

Every evening, I dig into the Brave settings to enable “Night mode (experimental)”, although my Samsung S23 is already set to dark mode. And every morning, I dig in again to disable night mode. This has been my routine for years.

In Opera, it’s just two clicks to toggle night mode – no restart required. In Brave, it’s four clicks and a restart. That’s 2,920 clicks per year in Brave versus 1,460 in Opera.

And usability matters: For example, cnn.com is perfectly readable with night mode in Opera (which in Opera comes with the dark mode, whereas in Brave dark mode design and night mode are two different settings for the goal ”white font on dark background”).

It’s time to rethink the night mode experience. Many users need it, but likely avoid it due to the cumbersome process in Brave. A simple, user-friendly toggle – ideally without restarting – would be a great improvement.

Thank you for your continued work on a great browser.

Dude you only need to enable this once:

chrome://flags/#darken-websites-checkbox-in-themes-setting

Now your browser will follow system theme and webpages too.

Disable the flag you used before. Now you will even have a checkbox in main menu to toggle dark mode if page is broken. And no restart needed any more.

o.k., that works. Thank you. But don’t you think, it makes no sense and is totally confusing to have these two menu items instead of one:

1. \settings \appearance \theme \system default (turn on dark theme when you device’s dark theme is on)

2. \settings \appearance \enable night mode (experimental [for years], restart)

and none nor both of them do the job to have white text on black background? But enabling the flag

chrome://flags/#darken-websites-checkbox-in-themes-setting

does it? Whereas Opera for example has only one simple tick box for this? And cnn.com is readable in dark mode in Opera, but not in Brave.

I’m not sure what dark mode (experimental) for. Always dark? That is not what I need. And while browser can follow day/night theme I need webpages follow too, and the checkbox is hidden behind the flag. This situation is years long, but it works good. Well, sometimes not (BBC). Maybe BBC should look why their site a mess?

I’ll second your request. In fact, I was about to post a similar one until I found yours.

I think the key here is to speed up switching night mode on (@2ParsecAway we appreciate your suggestions, but you went a bit far away from our goal).

Of course, having a quick, instant toggle would be beneficial, as opposed to:

  1. tapping the three dots in the corner,
  2. scrolling to settings,
  3. scrolling all the way down to appearance,
  4. toggling night mode,
  5. tapping to relaunch.

That’s what users are waiting for!

@2ParsecAway again, that doesn’t mean that a separate option to have dark and night mode go hand in hand is out of the question but, as I said, that could be handled separately, granting users the freedom to operate them as they wish.

Brave keeps to be simple and powerful. I guess your point is about dark mode without following system theme? Like webpages always dark (if dark mode is on) but browser is always day theme? Isn’t it too complicated and not really needed? We have everything working auto now and in case page is broken with dark settings we have a switch to switch it to day theme right in menu with a simple toggle?

Yes. Complete independence.

Dear Brave Team, any updates on this?
