Frezee | require pc reboot to fix | unable to use browser

Description of the issue:
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. open the browser (home page is enough)

  2. wait a few second (once the home page loaded it should begin the lag then freeze)

  3. the whole computer is frozen/blocked and requier a pc reboot to fix

Expected result:

browser open normaly and dont cause frezee even on home page

Brave Version( check About Brave): (v1.82.172)

Additional Information:

i suspect the browser use too much resource at start, and overload the memory

i have hardware acceleration on, and well since it frezze in only a few second i cant trun it off in the browser itself , i have to turn it off outside of the browser and i no clue how to

solutions i’ve tried : updating the browser via the instaler avaible on the main website
outcome : same issue , it freeze and pc reboot needed

im currently writting this using firefox

i will try to use windows repair tools and try if i find other solutions

i use windows 10 (build : 19045.6332)

for resource i’ve found other post about this issue

i’ve found other post on reddit and in the forum wich this issue seems similar :

things i’ve tried :

  • -opening private browser (it worked once)
  • i’ve openned once and it worked fine , even opened normal brave and no freeze, then i’ve tried a second time and nope it didnt it didnt worked this time , had to reboot

additional info : chrome works fine on latest version (Version 141.0.7390.55) release build

i will try to do a

DISM.exe and sfc /scannow

i will update on the outcome by editing this message if possible (otherwise i will make another reply)

edit : didnt fix

however i did manage to escape the freeze by quiting fast enough my pc lagged for a good 5min

i will experiment further on this

edit 2 :

i managed to turn off hardware acceleration, it was lagging like crazy but i did manage to pull it off

it no longer lags

no more hardware accélération for now

i will let the mods decide on close this topic or not

This was happening to me just a while ago (Win 11 24H2 26100.6584) same ram spike and freeze but I managed to fix it by disabling all extensions so it might be a broken extension which you can test by adding right clicking the brave shortcut on your desktop selecting properties and adding –disable-extensions to the target box after the quotes.

It looks like this on my Win 11 machine for reference:

“C:Program Files\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application\brave.exe” –disable-extensions

After which start brave by clicking the shortcut and see if the issue is fixed. If it is than an extension is to blame and you will have to figure out which and remove it (In my case it was Internet Download Managers extension getting stuck between versions). If it doesn’t fix the issue than at least that rules out the extensions being an issue.

update : it seems that the main issue comes from the home page , i’ve set the start up to a blank page and no more issue

i’ve tried this but this was not the issue , i’ve found what caused the issue

it’s the home page , the one with the stats and all, setting to a blank page fixed it

Huh I did that also so maybe that helped without me realizing it. Now that I think about it I wonder if something internal to the browser is being used on that page that wouldn’t normally be present? Anyways hopefully it gets tracked down and fixed sooner than later as this is a pretty nasty issue as it basically locks things up before any user action can be taken so the less experienced user may just be out of luck if this happens.
