Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Yes. When using a laptop or a monitor with limited vertical space, Brave’s top tab bar, address bar, and extension row take up a significant amount of vertical screen real estate. Additionally, while Brave Shields is fantastic, adblock-detection scripts on modern sites are becoming more aggressive, occasionally bypassing extensions or native filters unless they are fully decoupled and optimized deep within the core components.
Describe the solution you’d like
I would love to see a native “Compact Top Tab Layout” option added to Brave’s appearance settings, heavily inspired by the minimalist design philosophy of the Helium Standalone Project. Specifically, I would like to see:
- A One-Line Tab Bar option: Allow the address bar, open tabs, navigation buttons, and extensions to share a single horizontal row (collapsing the UI to around 30px of vertical space, just like Helium’s layout).
- Optimized Native Adblocker Engine: Optimize Brave Shields to function like Helium’s native component integration (which embeds an optimized, undetectable fork of uBlock Origin directly into the ungoogled-chromium runtime rather than running it as a standard user extension layered on top). This would ensure maximum execution speed and completely bypass anti-adblock detection scripts.
Describe alternatives you’ve considered
- Vertical Tabs: Brave offers vertical tabs, but they compromise horizontal screen space and disrupt classic browsing muscle memory.
- Full-Screen Mode (F11): Hides everything, which makes quick tab switching or URL entry highly disruptive.
- Switching Browsers: While Helium provides this perfect layout and deep adblock implementation out of the box, it lacks Brave’s mature ecosystem, stability, and sync infrastructure. Bringing these optimizations to Brave would make it the ultimate powerhouse.
Additional context
The community has frequently highlighted how streamlined minimalist layout designs save precious room on small displays. Combining an ultra-dense layout with an unbypassable, optimized native blocking component would elevate Brave’s privacy and performance standard to the next level.
