Description
I would like to request a feature that allows extensions to be added directly to the Brave sidebar, similar to how it works in Opera GX.
Opera GX allows users to pin extensions such as messaging apps, productivity tools, and utilities directly in the sidebar for quick access without opening new tabs or windows. This improves workflow efficiency and keeps frequently used tools easily accessible.
Currently in Brave, extensions are limited to the top toolbar, which becomes cluttered when many extensions are installed. A sidebar integration could provide a cleaner and more organized experience.
Proposed Feature
Allow users to pin extensions to the Brave sidebar, where each extension opens in a compact panel similar to sidebar apps.
Possible implementation ideas:
-
Add a “Pin to Sidebar” option in the extension menu.
-
Allow extensions to run in a sidebar panel container.
-
Provide a toggle in settings to enable or disable sidebar extension support.
-
Allow resizing or collapsing of sidebar panels.
Example (Opera GX Implementation)
Opera GX provides sidebar icons for apps and tools such as:
-
Messenger
-
Discord
-
WhatsApp
-
Instagram
-
Custom extensions
These open inside a sidebar panel instead of a full tab, making multitasking much easier.
Why This Would Benefit Brave
-
Cleaner toolbar with fewer extension icons
-
Faster access to frequently used extensions
-
Better multitasking and productivity
-
Competitive feature parity with browsers like Opera GX
Additional Suggestion
It would also be useful if Brave allowed custom sidebar widgets or extension panels, enabling developers to build sidebar-optimized tools.
Thank you for considering this feature request.
