Double-Clicking On Brave Crashes Ubuntu Interface

Sometimes I accidentally double click on the browser, and it crashes the Desktop interface on Ubuntu and closes everything I have opened except the browser and Thunderbird.

Also, for the last week or two, Brave icon shows up twice now, when I click on it, it opens another icon on the sidebar. What is that about?

How do I fix this? It’s only happening on one computer.

What version of the browser are you using and how did you go about installing it on your system?

Also, to clarify, what do you mean exactly when you say

Do you mean that you’re double-clicking the browser icon/shortcut (to launch it)? Or do you mean you’re performing a double-click action in the browser?

Brave 1.94.117 (Offciail Build) (x86_64)
Chromium: 152.0.7977.64

It’s installed via Snap on Ubuntu 24.04.
It happens when I double click the icon on the sidebar.

@M3GAN was this installed via curl or is it a snap install? Can you also please launch the browser and go to brave://crashes and share the most recent crash report IDs listed here (make sure you hit Send now first if the button is showing)?

Mine is snap. It doesn’t show up in crashes. The most recent thing is June 6. There are 35 entries. I even simulated it again, but it hasn’t changed any.

Apologies – I misread your initial post here. Looks like you’re saying it’s Ubuntu that experiences the crash, not the browser itself.

This may be an issue specific to snap. We can test this by having you install the using curl as per our website. Both versions can be installed on the same system and the native install won’t overwrite anything in the snap directory so your data should be safe. We’ll make a backup just in case. Here’s the steps I’d recommend:

  1. Find your current Brave user data directory – typically in ~/snap/brave/current/.config/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser – and copy it somewhere else. This will be your backup data or safety.
  2. Now, install Brave via curl instructions on our website.
  3. Pin the shortcut icon to your desktop then double click to open it – note: a potential pitfall here is confusing the two installs since the icons look the same, so make sure you’re launching the newly installed version. You can double check this by checking the brave://version page in the browser. The native install you just added should have /opt/brave.com/brave/brave as the executable path.

I was having probs with taskbar pinned launching in Win. Maybe try deleting the sidebar icon, and try launching from desktop? or Main, and see if that changes it.
