By clicking the right arrow button? Or do I need to click it, causing the ad to be displayed in the browser? The FAQ says you don’t get BAT for “clicking” ads, but when I click the right arrow button to dismiss an ad, ads are described as “dismissed” in history.

you get bat for ads despite you see / dismiss / click it but the new system if you dismiss ads 2 times then this ads would not show up again for 48 hours
check this
" If a user has “dismissed” an ad twice in a row without clicking, also do not show anything from that same campaign for 48 hours."
and for the history part it mark each ads if it view dismissed clicked
