Can't send images via Facebook web Messenger - Images Stuck sending and never send

It is a bit confusing. I appreciate you hanging in. That was a poor word choice on my part.

The issue is with one user’s chat only, regardless of what I’ve done, and only in Mint.

Which includes trying the chat with that user with a new profile. I’ve tested the situation using Brave on POP OS with that user and it works fine… So…I’m exploring that it could somehow be a Mint issue.

Version 1.63.162 Chromium: 122.0.6261.69 (Official Build) (64-bit) in both Linux OS. So it is the same version of Brave. One works, one does not.

I do find it odd with all the settings resets and reinstalls that the issue persists.

Another thing I noticed: with that chat if I scroll back into the past, it hangs (won’t scroll past) “sending” where I last attempted to send an image. So it is still stuck trying to “send” the image …So something is clearly in error.

Also the other chat user can send me images. So it is isolated to just me sending to this user in Mint.

With other users, you can scroll back and it will actually show the chat history as expected.

That does sound very strange. Btw, looking back at your initial post, I want to clarify as well:

When you said it occurs also in Vivaldi, you mean it also gets stuck and never sends? If so, then yeah, it seems you have something weird going on between your OS and chromium browsers. If so, most likely will need to be handled upstream by Chromium rather than anyone at Brave.

One thing I don’t think had been mentioned (and forgive me if I’m missing it), but could you perhaps try installing Brave Beta and/or Brave Nightly and see if it also occurs there?

Yes, the same unexpected result in Vivaldi.

Testing: https://brave.com/download-beta/
Version 1.64.82 Chromium: 122.0.6261.57 (Official Build) beta (64-bit)

UGH. It’s the same. hangs on sending… :frowning:

  1. create a new Linux user account :
    $ sudo adduser [username]
Log in with the new Linux account
    Launch Brave and try .
If it doesnt’ work , try deleting all Brave extensions (not only deactivate them) ,and shield off .

  2. Can you send FB GIFs and .zip files in FB messenger with Brave ?

  3. did you search on Mint forums a bug like yours ?
    https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=400371

I found on another forum on r/ where you said 5days ago it didn’t work even in private mode …

FB GiFs don’t work. No files send. They all hang on Sending.
I have not found an answer to this issue.

Correct, it appears to function normally in Private Browsing mode. As I mentioned earlier in this thread.

and the 1. and 3. points ?

  1. Creating a new user DID work.
  2. I’ve tried the flatpak… same issue. And the Mint issue is with attachments… which is only part of my issue. “Built in” GIFs also do not work.
  1. so there was probably an error somewhere in your /home/your_username/.config/BraveSoftware

@dagsix,
This is a long thread so just catching up here — so if I understand correctly:

  • The issue is that you’re unable to send image-based messages and/or attachments on FB messenger in Brave
  • The issue is only present in the Linux Mint OS
  • Shields down/Fresh profile/data reset did not resolve the issue

Is all of the above correct?

“The issue is that you’re unable to send image-based messages and messengers OWN internals GIFS on FB messenger in Brave” is correct

Yes, just Mint.

Shields down is correct. Data reset did NOT fix it. Fresh (new) Mint user profile did. New Brave profile did not.

As g44 suggested, and I think is correct, my main linux profile’s Brave .config is somehow corrupt/has an error. Somehow the issue is being carried over when I log back into that profile on Brave to restore it…

Yes, after wiping out the /home/your_username/.config/BraveSoftware folder and restarting the issue is still there.

I think we’ve kicked around the most reasonable courses of action… I can just have Firefox open for messenger. Not ideal but whatever.

I appreciate everyone’s help with this. Thank you!

I don’t understand,
just create a new linux user in Mint and copy your data from /home/actual_user/* (except .config/*) to /home/new_username/

and :
delete actual_user linux user
rename new_username linux user
