Cannot perm turn off "Answer with AI" searches

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue:

How can this issue be reproduced:

If I…

  1. Open Brave
  2. hit the quick settings icon,
  3. toggle off “Answer with AI”
  4. close Brave,
  5. reopen Brave,
  6. toggle switch automatically switches back to “on” everytime I reopen Brave.

i.e. I cannot permanently turn off AI, and have to redo this everytime I use Brave.

If I go to Settings, Leo AI, everything is toggled off.

Expected result: permanently turn off AI in searches

Brave Version( check About Brave): Build 1.87.188

Mobile Device details: Note 9, Android 10

Additional Information:

@Chuchuchia it’s cookies based so if you have anything clearing, it will switch back. Big thing to do is just to use Anti-AI, which also goes by AI Suggestions blocker, in Brave Shields. Go to Settings → Shields → Content Filtering.

This will remove much of the AI things on websites, including Brave Search

Er, well, it used to. Just was testing on Beta and it still shows. @fanboynz isn’t that supposed to stop the Ask (AI) button from showing up? Or what was the difference again in terms of AI Suggestions and all?

==========

That didn’t fix it. It also seems like there is a similar problem with the “anonymous use metrics" in Quick Settings getting toggled back on too.

Yeah so the toggle doesn’t remove the button in the search field (unfortunately) – I have an open issue for this here:

Note that it shouldn’t toggle itself back on (assuming you’re not clearing data for the site), and while it’s off, you at minimum should not see the AI summary appear in the Search results. @Chuchuchia @Saoiray can you confirm that the AI summary doesn’t appear when the Answer with AI option is toggled off?

Additionally, he previous filter list we had that used to block this for Brave Search (and all other engines) no long works for Brave Search (works for other search engines/sites though).

Will dig into this.

@Chuchuchia as I’m seeing this again, I think I might have partially been reading this wrong. Are you talking about https://search.brave.com/ and the quick settings icon there? If you meant elsewhere then I need to answer more appropriately. I just want to make sure I’m picturing the location properly.

Also would want to ask, did you set anything to clear data when you exit Brave? Such as the setting below:

Yes, I have “clear data on exit" toggled on. Would yhat be why this is happening?

@Chuchuchia if you’re referring to Brave Search website settings, yes. Those are saved in cookies. If it’s clearing data on exit then it would mean it’s clearing those cookies with your preferences.

Cancel my last post, it didn’t fix it. Still toggles back on after toggling off “clear data on exit".

It would be, but remember, Brave Search is a website, thus the only way it can remember anything is via a cookie. So if you are clearing the data on exit, sadly that includes Brave Search as well.

I didn’t find it, but perhaps if it doesn’t exist, a feature request could be to exclude sites from being cleared on exit by domain? For example, if brave.com is excluded, then it would be the only site that doesn’t clear data on exit. (If this is a feature, someone do point that out please, I didn’t find it, I found the inverse, to always clear a specific site on close, but not the other way around.)

Just for clarification, the 2 things circled in RED keep toggling back on after I toggle them off.

Also, I’m not just trying to remove a “button". What I am trying to stop is the Brave search from automatically giving me AI generated answers at the top of my searches.

Go to brave shields, content filtering and enable AI Suggestions Blocker.

It’s already toggled on

I personally understood that part. The only way this could be getting forgotten is the setting you initially said worked, but then didn’t:

Which I had not been able to replicate, as it’s being remembered (and was set months ago, so I’ve had no AI responses in my Brave Search).

Private windows will always forget, but regular windows shouldn’t be forgetting, it’s just a cookie that sets this setting.

Personally I’m out of ideas. @Mattches, might I have missed something? It appears the only issue is Brave Search’s cookie is not being saved, and thus it keeps forgetting this one setting. I checked desktop and Android on my side, but both remember just fine.

@Chuchuchia disabling the Clear on exit function should have fixed this. I also cannot reproduce the issue – both of those options stay toggled on (or off) correctly on my Samsung Galaxy.

Do you happen to be viewing the page in desktop mode by chance?

Still isn’t resolved. I don’t use desktop mode.

What about this toggle to “forget me", would that have anything to do with it?
