Bug Report: System Back Button Unresponsive Across All Websites

Bug Report: System Back Button Unresponsive Across All Websites

Description of the Issue:
The system back button ( gesture navigation) is entirely unresponsive when using the Brave browser.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open the Brave browser on the device.
  2. Navigate to any website (e.g., Hi. com).
  3. Click a link to navigate to a secondary page.
  4. Attempt to use the Android system back swipe gesture to return to the previous page.

Actual Result:
The back command is ignored. The browser remains on the current page, and no backward navigation occurs. This issue is persistent across all tested domains.

Expected Result:
Using the system gesture should successfully navigate the browser to the previously visited page within the current tab’s history.

Environment / Device Details:

  • Brave Version: Brave 1.90.121, Chromium 148.0.7778.96
  • Device: Samsung Galaxy A73
  • OS: Android 16 (Build/BP2A.250605.031.A3)

Additional Information:
The issue renders standard mobile browsing severely disrupted. Any prompt investigation and resolution by the development team would be greatly appreciated.

This has also been happening to me too. I have to 100% close the app for it to even work or I go to history and click that but it doesn’t take me to the section I was on which is troublesome at times. I will be able to get it to work a few times then it’s back to not working.

It’s not my wifi or offline data causing the issues as it still doesn’t work either way. Also not my VPN, I use Nord, because I did try to see if that was it but it wasn’t.

I am having the same issue. To add to this, I can still go back by dragging from the left edge. I believe it may still be ignoring the system navigation command, but the chromium back gesture makes it go back anyway. I believe this may also be the root cause. The chromium gestures have seemed to be secondary but still present at least sometimes earlier, but now it takes priority over the system navigation. I assume it tries to go forward and back at the same time when swiping from the right. The issue may be fixed if chromium navigation is disabled entirely for users with gesture navigation, but as far as I can tell, there is no way for the user to do this manually.

I want to add that the back button in the navigation bar at the bottom also stops working not just gesture back. It starts to work if you close and then reopen the app but after some time stops again.

I also noticed if the page hasn’t fully loaded the back button works but not if it’s fully loaded.

I’m also experiencing the back button on the system navigation bar not functioning until Brave is exited and reopened, and then it works again for awhile but eventually stops working.

However, the swipe gesture from the left edge to navigate back continues working when the system button isn’t working.

Hi all, thanks for taking the time to write in and report. We’ve got this issue filed and the team is currently reviewing https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/55501.

I’m having the same issue

I have faced the same issue. The app is on the latest version (Brave 1.90.121, Chromium 148.0.7778.96) and I’m using it on Poco F5 running on Android 15.

Same issue same phone as lonewolf17, but android 13 miui 14.0.6.

I’ve been having a similar issue for the past couple days. I don’t use the swipe gesture, but just pushing the “back” arrow at the bottom of my screen… doesn’t work most of the time. Restarting the app makes it work for a short time, and then it stops - it kind of feels like I get a set number of times I can press “back” before it breaks.

If I’m on a page where the website itself has a “back” button I can click on, that seems to work, but just pushing the button that’s on my phon
