Every time I try to open Brave nothing happens until I restart my computer, then it works perfectly. I have tried reinstalling. I have tried changing the target location in properties with “–disable-gpu” AND "–profile-directory=“Test Profile”. Opening brave incognito doesn’t work. Brave Beta DOES work, but I don’t want to use Brave Beta because it doesn’t have all of my settings saved from Brave Browser.
Before you load Brave, check in Task Manager if there is a remnant brave.exe process still running. If so, kill it, and check if Brave then loads okay.
The only things in task manager are Brave Update Services. Ending those tasks don’t help.
Whether Brave is loaded or not, I do not see a “Brave Update Services” listed in my Task Manager. In services.msc, I don’t see it there, either. I used SysInternals’ AutoRuns to see if there was something “brave” stored elsewhere to run an updater, like in Task Scheduler. It found one under:
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Entries under that registry are loaded when Windows starts up. The startup entry there runs:
C:\Users\leeho\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Update\1.3.361.151\BraveUpdateCore.exe
An updater should not be continuously running, only when it checks for and while downloading and installing an update. Apparently Brave just checks once when you start Windows to see if there is an update. Otherwise, it likely also checks when you have brave.exe running.
I ran the above command, and braveupdatecore.exe appeared (loaded), and then immediately disappeared (unloaded) probably because it found I was already at the latest available released version. That you see braveupdatecore.exe still running indicates it is stuck trying to update Brave.
You said you already tried killing braveupdatecore.exe (but you said “those” which means more than one although I only saw that one process appear and disappear), but you still could not load Brave. Yet when you restart Windows then you can load Brave which hints that something is running that blocks Brave from loading. Guess it’s time to disable all startup programs to eliminate them from possibly interfering with Brave.
Do you use a 3rd-party anti-virus/malware program? Any other protection software?
Are you using Applocker in Windows? Or SRPs (Software Restriction Policies) defined using the security policy editor (gpedit.msc)?
When I wrote that last post it was right after my computer started, so it was probably brave running the update checker at the start of my PC.
This has only started happening in the last 6ish months. I have had the same startup tasks since before and after this has started happening. Also, I only use Windows Defender and haven’t changed any settings in that either.
