Dear Brave Community,
Regarding; Brave VPN for Linux
I shall be cancelling my subscription which was taken out on a MS Win 10 host.
The Brave Leo AI when promoted suggests Proton VPN (CH) as a recommendation from Brave support. Another option for Linux it mentions is Mullvard (SE). Not sure what other options there are for Linux.
is the brave firewall tightly coupled to the brave vpn that is are the brave firewall and brave vpn always bundled or can they be purchased separately and it appears the brave vpn many never be delivered for linux it does not appear to be a priority on there feature on the brave product backlog
Checked Brave Firewall and VPN bundling and Linux status
Tightly coupled — they’re one product, not two.
Brave Firewall + VPN is a single subscription ($9.99/mo or $99.99/yr, up to 10 devices). You cannot buy the firewall alone or the VPN alone. The firewall is a server-side component (powered by Guardian) that sits in the path of traffic already inside the VPN tunnel — it blocks trackers, malware domains, and known threats in real time. There’s no standalone firewall client you can run without the VPN.
So the “firewall” isn’t a local host firewall like Windows Firewall or ufw — it’s more like a network-level content filter applied at the VPN exit node.
On your Linux observation — you’re right to read the tea leaves:
The GitHub issue (brave/brave-browser#15817) has been open since May 2021 with no meaningful movement.
A July 2026 Gizmodo review still says “The VPN doesn’t work on Linux.”
A May 2026 thebestvpn.com review says “A Linux version is in development” — same vague phrasing as 5 years ago.
The technical blocker (no standard Linux VPN API, would need strongSwan/WireGuard integration) is real but not insurmountable — Proton VPN and Mullvad both solved it. It’s a priority problem, not a technical problem.
The likely reason: Brave’s business model is browser-first, and Linux users are a small slice of their revenue. Their paid features (Firewall + VPN, Brave Origin one-time purchase) are where the money is, and Linux is the only major platform where they can’t monetise. That’s not a coincidence.
Practical takeaway for you on Ubuntu 24.04: if you want Brave’s ad/tracker blocking plus a real VPN, run Brave browser (free, works great on Linux) alongside Proton VPN or Mullvad as your system-level VPN. You get the same net effect as Brave Firewall + VPN would, minus the $120/yr.
Yours,
York
