Brave unable to update automatically

Made a post about this around 4 months ago. Never was able to solve the issue. If someone can help me find a solution, it would be appreciated.

Brave will not update itself. When I visit the ‘About Brave’ page I see this error code: " An error occurred while checking for updates: Update check failed to start (error code 1: 0X80004005)."

This issue has persisted for around 12 months now. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled the app multiple times. I have deleted all files relevant to Brave and reinstalled multiple times.

Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):
Windows 11 Pro - Version 24H2 - Build 26100.4652
Brave Desktop - Version 1.81.131 Chromium: 139.0.7258.66 (Official Build) (64-bit)

@Mcronald

There is probably some kind of a snag, involving old data / old info, somewhere. That requires a totally fresh installation ← meaning, make another effort to remove some grime that is stuck somewhere.

FIRST Try:

https://crystalidea.com/uninstall-tool’ ← recently used successfully by a member of Brave Community.

SECOND: Fresh install of Brave Browser, Download from:

https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/tag/v1.80.125

BECAUSE, that version is a bit older than the latest version (1.81.131) that has major hardware acceleration issue(s).

I have tried this twice now to no effect. I used GeekUninstaller instead of Uninstall Tool because the force removal is free. I force removed brave twice and installed the latest version from both the github release page and the official brave download page.

Not sure what could be causing this at this point. Some weird edge case with hardware compatibility?

Back in April, you wrote:

I do have administrative privileges and the binary is located at “P:\Program Files\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application\brave.exe”.

It does appear that the updater binary is on my C drive though at “C:\Program Files (x86)\BraveSoftware\Update”.

I figure, that a traditional installation, instead of such a custom installation, is presently required.

Because I want to preserve wherever are the Bookmarks files in whatever are the Brave Browser users profiles, I would back up the User Data folder:

  • %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\

And then delete the BraveSoftware folder. IOW, be prepared for a fresh installation of Brave Browser. “Fresh” means no Brave Browser residuals, tailings, vapors, etc. in the Brave Browser installation path(s) - not even the word, “Brave”.

Then, determine what is the architecture of the Windows OS computer:

  1. Select Start and then select Settings > System > About .

  2. In the System> About window that opens, the architecture version of Windows can be found next to System type under Device specifications. It’s listed as the processor type.

Based upon what you find, then select one of the following, latest Brave Browser (stable release) installers available at Brave’s GitHub site:

https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/download/v1.81.136/brave-v1.81.136-win32-arm64.zip

https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/download/v1.81.136/brave-v1.81.136-win32-x64.zip
