Brave news setup issues first time user

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue: I’m trying to select news feeds. My toggle options don’t match the video on instruction page / first time after selecting- I got crypto news which I thought I deselected
By default all news on the left of page- had corresponding Blue “Follow on right

I assume that the blue follow means that I’m choosing to follow that paper eg NYT was first in line/ every other paper had the blue follow toggle
-So I un followed the undesirable papers which turned grey “unfollow “
This is how I selected my feed

did I get this all wrong- none of my favorites show up in the several scrolling pages

I have iPhone 22 fully updated
I cannot find visual explanation of what “selected “ means tech writers need to run instructions by a grandmother who is not a techie I read just fine but no one describes what selected looks like on my phone

How can this issue be reproduced?

Expected result:

Brave Version( check About Brave): latest version downloaded today

Mobile Device details iPhone 12 updated

Additional Information:

Which means you followed it rather than unfollow. Main thing is don’t follow any “channels” are they are prepackaged mixes which usually contain sources we don’t want. Unfollow any of that.

On the Brave News area when you go to it you can see Popular, Channels, and Following. The latter will show what you’re actively following.

Popular is a list of random sources which you can follow individually.

Or there’s a search bar above all of that where you can search for any particular source you want.

In the screenshot below you can see where I went to the search thing and typed in Brave. It showed a few options. Brave Blog is showing Unfollow because I decided to follow it. The others, which is the blog in different languages , all show Follow because I’m not following them. So it’s basically asking if I want to subscribe to it.

So you just choose which of the methods you want to use. If you have particular content you want, it’s easier to search.

To remove, you can search the source and Unfollow or you can simply go to the Following part to see the list and undo.

Again, channels will be many sources combined and you can’t finesse what is shown. I hate the channels they have because of that. It’s always better to Unfollow those and add each source individually.

Thank you so much

Especially for the photos

I appreciate the insight on groups/channels

Just to make sure

If NYT. Has a unfollow grey at the right toggle - it means I will see news from NYT.

ie : if there’s blue follow it means I’m not following it…Is this correct?

Again thanks for your help

Right, if it shows Unfollow to the side of it, then it means you are currently following it and it should show up in your newsfeed.

Correct, if we see the Follow like in the image below, then it means you’re currently not following that particular source.

To repeat and clarify a bit about channels vs sources

If you’re following a channel that includes the source, it might still show up even though you’re not individually following it. I know I’m repeating a bit, but let me give a very specific example.

Let’s say you check CBS Sports and you might see where it shows Follow. So you’re not following it. But you check your newsfeed and you see CBS Sports articles. Why isn’t it respecting your choice, you may wonder?

Well, if you are following Top Sources, which is one of the channels, it includes CBS Sports as part of it. You would think that they would coincide with each other, where selecting Top Sources would then check off the boxes so it will let you know CBS Sports and others are being followed as a result, but for some reason it doesn’t work that way. And the Top Sources channel doesn’t clearly show what sources it follows or let you refine it.

Sorry if I’m saying too much, but I know this has been a confusing aspect that has thrown some people before. So I guess just wanting to be clear on it.

cc: @Mattches (in regard to how channels vs sources work, maybe something to suggest gets changed)
