Brave has become VERY unstable, essentially unusable now

Brave used to be solid and reliable. Now it is not. It crashes tabs constantly, complaining about not enough memory. I have 32Gb DDR4 installed.

I currently have just one tab open in one session of Brave. If I open Task Manager, I see SEVENTEEN instances of Brave if I expand the visible entry. I though maybe some of these were created by installed extensions, so I opened a single private window. I had 14 sessions.

I do see some sessions going from low power usage to Very High randomly. No idea why this would be the case, and wonder if it’s that, rather than not enough memory, that’s causing the crashing.

Whatever the cause, using Brave has become so frustrating that I have to switch to something else.

Are the installed extensions allowed to run in private windows? Additionally, can you try installing the Beta build and perform the same test and see how much memory/resources a fresh install uses?

There are no extensions running in the private window. It seems to be a Brave issue. It’s just constantly crashing tabs.

I installed the Beta version alongside the “stable” one. I won’t load anything; just freezes solid “Not reponding”. I think Brave has done it’s run. Time to change.

If you still want to continue troubleshooting, I would start by (in your main profile/stable browser) disabling Graphics Acceleration and test to see if this improves performance at all (Settings > System > Use Graphics [...]).

Thanks, Mattches. Already have that disabled. Also, have Memory set to Balanced. Neither of those changes made the slightest difference to its (non) performance.

I guess I should add that I’m still running Win 10, if that makes a difference.

If it has been disabled, might also try toggle Graphics Acceleration “on”.

Do you by chance have any flags enabled on the brave://flags page (flags w/modified values appear at the top of the page so should be easy to find them)?

ISo am I and just checked with 4 tabs open I have 12 instances running in task manager without any issues - and I only have 16Gb.

Don’t remember last time it crashed and if your’s used to be “solid and reliable” sound like something else is causing it and/or your install has got corrupted in some way?

I only post this as a comparison in case that helps. :slightly_smiling_face:
