Brave freezes when multiple windows are open and graphics acceleration is enabled

Description of the issue:

Brave freezes every few seconds/minutes when multiple windows are open and graphics acceleration is enabled.
Whether it’s seconds or minutes seems to depend on how many windows are open. Just tabs don’t seem to be a problem.
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Install latest Brave Web Browser for Fedora Atomic Desktops (https://brave.com/linux/).

  2. Open multiple windows and tabs.

  3. Try to navigate normally switching between tabs/windows and scrolling through web sites.

Expected result:

  • Smooth navigation.

Brave Version:

  • Brave 1.81.137 (Official Build) (64-bit)

    Chromium: 139.0.7258.158

Additional Information:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme (8-cores, 16-threads, up to 5.1 GHz)
  • RAM: 16 GB LPDDR5X-7500 (soldered, dual-channel)

System itself is not freezing nor under stress in any aspect. Only the browser freezes.
Never happened with Firefox or Chrome (which where my main browsers before), so it’s probably not a hardware issue.

WORKAROUND: After some online research, I found that other people presenting the problem manage to “solve” it by disabling “Use graphics acceleration when available” in the settings so that’s what I did and it worked. Trade-off: higher CPU usage.

@JaniSoto the “workaround” is actually a troubleshooting step. If it resolves with graphics acceleration enabled then it means your graphics card settings are not set properly to work with Brave. Or at least there is potentially some incompatibility.

So best thing to do is make sure your drivers are updated and you try to go through your graphics settings, maybe toy with them. Are you using NVIDIA or what graphics card?

Hey @Saoiray , thank you so much for your fast reply!

It’s not a dedicated graphics card. It’s the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU with integrated RDNA3 graphics.

I’ve used Firefox, Chrome and other desktop apps with graphic acceleration enabled for a long time without compatibility problems or any problem at all… Always with multiple windows/tabs/sessions spread along multiple monitors…

It was when I tried Brave, that it happened for the first time. And again, it only happens when they’re multiple windows open at the same time.

Drivers are also up to date.

RTX 3090, drivers are all up to date, Windows 10, same thing happened to me. Occasionally it will freeze up and stutter with GPU acceleration turned on, videos will crash and page will reload as well. Scrolling a page causes stutters. Turning GPU acceleration off is the only solution, but the smoothness of browsing isnt the same :frowning:

trying different graphics APIs under brave://flags does not help make any difference either
