Brave doesn't start when I run it as administrator and Brave Shield doesn't work

All of your profiles should be located at %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data

Specifically, the Default folder there should be the default profile. If you’ve created more of them, you may see Profile 1, Profile 2, etc.

I would highly recommend checking permissions on the %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data folder; for me this is C:\Users\brian\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser. It’s possible this root folder is not accessible by your user account. You may need to allow access and then propagate to all the child items.

For example, I see my user account brian as having access

If you click the Advanced button, you should see your account as the owner. If you don’t, please change your account to the owner and then pick Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object

i see all the profiles there. thanks a lot, uff. i breathe much better now :folded_hands:
really thanks.

now i can wait for the solution with peace in my mind. :folded_hands:

OK great - thanks for confirming @rjeasy :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

In the window you took screenshot for, it DOES look like your user account is owner, which is perfect!

Can you please open that dialog again and check the box Substituir todas as entradas de permissao do objeto subordinado por entradas de permissao herdaveis deste objeto and then click Aplicar

I believe this will fix the issue for you. Once you do that, relaunching Brave should work.

In short: I suspect the permissions issue was the root cause. Running as admin was hiding the problem and makes it look like everything is working. Chromium then removed this ability with https://chromium-review.googlesource.com/c/chromium/src/+/6515318 which landed in Chromium 138 (Brave version 1.80) which is why we see the problem now.

error ocurred aplying info about security at :
(that folder we talking about)
fail to numerate the objects in the container . acess denied

ps. i really dont enjoy when updates interfer with things working perfectly previously

@rjeasy oh wow - interesting. Is your user account in the Local admin group? You can check this by doing keyboard shortcut Windows + R and then paste in lusrmgr.msc and push Enter.

When you open admin group, you should see your user account:

For the error you got, maybe you can try to click the Continuar button and it should move onto the next file. It’s possible there is a file inside your profile which is owned by a different user account. Something is causing permissions issue.

its says : not possible to use that snap-in with this windows 10 edition. …(wich is weird cose im with windows 11 home) … to manage user accounts for this computer , use tool ‘’ user accounts’’ on control panel.

and i think i am the only user account, the admin

@rjeasy OK thanks for trying. Something you can try is rebooting and then try to change the ownership again. It’s possible there’s a lock on a file and that’s why it can’t change it (rebooting may release the lock). If you try changing ownership and this error message comes up again, I wonder if you can try to change the ownership again, but this time click Continuar.

I’m sorry this happened. It wasn’t something we at Brave did - this affects any Chromium browser. There seems to be a file inside your profile directory which you don’t have access to. If you can find this one and make yourself the owner, that should fix the problem.

Maybe someone can recommend a utility to help?

will try that now.

when i click on shortcut icon and go to proprieties /security show this on users.

im not usre why is there an anon account there
also dont know about tha INTERACTIVE.

is this normal?

is it safe to delete them, if i dont know what they are.

keeping my files safe, meaning, not losing them or acess to files and data by erasing those users.

Worst case scenario just export bookmarks and passwords, uninstall the browser and select to erase browsing history, and then install again, right?

sme issue here it seems its something new

ok. so with the reboot is not giving me that error any more. but it its same thing, no profiles, no passwords no user names.

and now also chrome is acting up. same thing, no profiles, users or passwords.

only book marks are there.

@Saoiray yeah that would work. But definitely not ideal as there are so many profiles.

@rjeasy when Windows is showing a username like this which has the S-1-5-21-.... syntax, this is a Windows SID. This is typically only shown when a user account is deleted but there is still a permission set for that account. This makes sense - because it says Conta Desconhecida (unknown user). Maybe you copied the directory from another machine? Or perhaps you had changed your Windows username.

Whatever the case, I suspect there is one file owned by this user Conta Desconhecida. That file needs to be changed so that Ruben is the owner basically.

Chrome/Chromium was the one who made this fix - so it’s not a surprise they have the issue too.

BTW- INTERACTIVE is fine! This is an alias for the user currently logged in (you!).

True enough, @clifton. While mentioning that, long been requested by people to be able to sync or import/export profiles and settings. You know if that’s something that can be done in the future? Would be helpful for situations like this or moving to new devices.

Sorry to deviate a bit but figured might be worth mentioning as that got brought up. Anyway, I’m going to vanish again as I have nothing to offer to this specific issue at this time.

is there a way to check wich is the file owned by that user?

and is it needed, cose after reboot PC its worked, without error, it works on apply and continue.

yes. i was using brave on other PC before this one, and used the sync to pass all to this one, book marks, passwords, usersnames.

this was more at least one year ago. this guys and the updates.

if i save my sync phrase , a delete everything there is about brave and reinstall new, will i keep the, bookmarks, usernames, and passwords of all profiles?
or each profile as is unic sync phrase?

I can’t think of an easy way to find which file owned by that user.

But the approach you took above where you open the permissions → advanced and were on this screen:

If you check the box Substituir todas as entradas de permissao do objeto subordinado por entradas de permissao herdaveis deste objeto and then click Aplicar. Then lastly, you can click OK. This should be fixing it. I would be very surprised if Brave is not having your data when you re-open it

You can also go to Hamburger menu and pick More tools > Add new profile. Chromium might look at the existing directories and rebuild the information about all the profiles you have created locally.

no. nothing is working. are they aware of this mess they made?
where can i talk to them.?
i just lost both for now, chrome and brave.

is it possible for me to just go to previous update version?

also dont think you notice my question before.

if i save my sync phrase , a delete everything there is about brave and reinstall new, will i keep the, bookmarks, usernames, and passwords of all profiles?
or each profile as is unic sync phrase?

You can go to a previous version, yes. It’s possible you could lose some data (cookies, saved password) because you are downgrading a version. Make a copy of the folder first.

If you use Sync and then do a fresh install, join the sync group, this should work great. The only problem is that you need to join sync on each profile. Or you would need to setup sync for each profile.

There is one last strategy I can think of. You might try to go back a version first. But if you wanted to try, here it is:
Make a backup copy of your profile directory (%LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data) first. Maybe create a ZIP file.

When you are ready to try, you can rename %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data folder as %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data2. Then launch Brave.

It should create an empty profile. Then, you can exit Brave and then copy the files inside %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data2 into %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data and replace them.

but does each profile as its own sync phrase, or one sync phrase gets all profiles back ?

cose if it does and i cant acess them now im lost here.

at the end will this be fixed, or its an user must do thing?

Each profile has its own set of bookmarks, passwords, etc. Sync is also a per-profile thing.

I can look to see if there’s a Chromium bug about this. If this affects enough people, it should be fixed in Chromium and we’ll get the update and we can release a new version of Brave with that Chromium version.

Definitely, I would recommend making a ZIP file of your profile directory. Everything is still there. There must be a permissions issue though. Try some of the steps for the sub-folders. For example, look at permissions for %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Default folder. Or for one of your profile folders (ex: %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Profile 1). Your account should be the owner for these folder - and you can propagate the permission to all child object.

GM.

so if enough people gets afected by this they will fix it and everything will be back to normal?

i made a copy of the user data folder, and renamed it.
however im still not sure, if i should just wait, or risk making it worst while trying to get it back.

is it important to make a zip file. or just regularly copy with name changed works as fine?

and to be sure, having that user data folder copy. all my passwords and user names and extensions are safe in that folder?
and i can safely delete and uninstal brave, then just copy paste user data and it should work + no data loss?

how can i return to previous version?, at least in order to see if i can get back and save my sync phrase for each profile.

in your experience when this kind of things happen, how much time does it take for DEVs to notice and fix ? in average

is this a thing they can notice on their own, or its depedent on how many users go and comlplain?

i have done that step for each profile

, but still not showing when i open brave.

i know im taking a lot of your time, i can only thank you for the assitence/help, i had really importante stuff on each of those profiles. and all of brave in general.

well noticed now

missing profiles, i dont know why.this is getting worst.

is there any reason for those profile files to be missing. i havent deleted them

i overlooked at first print and noticed that wasnt there some profiles from the beggining. maybe i was some profiles i deleted before when it was running.

but profile 3; 4 ;5 disapear for unkown reason.

and yesterday i was able to see them for a short time. im confused
