Description of the issue: When reorganizing bookmarks in a bookmark folder dropdown (the vertical list that appears when clicking a folder on the bookmarks bar), Brave automatically opens the bookmark I drag over, rather than allowing me to position it above or below another bookmark. This happens even though I am simply dragging to reorder- not releasing the mouse over the bookmark or clicking it. The drag gesture is being interpreted as a click/open action.
How can this issue be reproduced?
Click a bookmarks folder on the bookmarks bar to open its dropdown list.
Click and hold any bookmark inside the folder to begin dragging it.
While dragging, move the cursor over another bookmark item in the list.
As soon as the cursor passes over the other bookmark, Brave opens that bookmark immediately. The reorganization worked, but the page is opened which is not ideal.
Additional Information: macOS version 26.1 Tahoe. MacBook Air M4, 2025 13”. Input device: Trackpad. Reordering works in brave://bookmarks/ – the issue is specific to the folder dropdown UI.
Do you have any flags enabled/disabled on the brave://flags page at this time? Additionally can you please try adding a fresh profile to the browser, making some bookmarks and test the behavior in the new profile and tell me if the issue occurs there as well?
No, those were already the settings. Everything else was set to default. I didn’t manually disable/enable these in particular. I might’ve disabled one or two from a Youtube video like eg. “Brave settings to change” but definitely not all of those. Is it possible that some of these were just automatically changed to disabled/enabled because I changed some of Brave’s main settings?
If you haven’t messed with any of the flags then that’s not likely the source of the issue. I’m going to ask some of our macOS folks and see if any of them are also encountering this issue. In the meantime, can you try creating an additional browser profile (Menu --> More tools --> Add profile), create a few bookmarks and then test the behavior in the new profile and see if the issue occurs there as well?
Yes, I’ve already done that and had the same issue persist. I only needed to create 2 bookmarks to simulate it (dragging on top of or below one another), and it still spontaneously opened the page.
Nobody was able to reproduce this – everyone that responded reports this behavior working as intended. Out of curiosity, you stated that you are using the macOS trackpad – can you quickly test and see if this occurs if you use a mouse connected (wired or wireless) to your macbook?
Can you please try downloading the Beta build of the browser and test to see if you get the same behavior there? Note that downloading/installing the Beta will not overwrite your current install (will install as a separate browser)?
Just did it on Beta build and same issue there as well. Maybe it’s because whenever I hold an item and drag via the trackpad then let go, it thinks it’s a click or something?
Yeah it’s beginning to look like a system/hardware issue. To be sure, if you’re willing we can do one more test to [basically] confirm this. Try installing another Chromium based browser (Chrome, Edge, Opera, Vivaldi, etc. – any of them will do) and then a browser not based on the Chromium engine – for sake of easy I’d say use Firefox. You can delete/uninstall these once you’ve tested.
Once you have the new browsers installed:
Open the new Chromium based browser
Make some bookmarks
Try clicking and dragging bookmarks around to see if the issue occurs in this browser.
Note whether or not you experience the same issue. Then:
Open Firefox
Make some bookmarks

If the issue occurs in both the Chromium-based browser and Firefox, then this likely has something to do with your trackpad and/or OS.
If the issue occurs in the Chromium-based browser but does not occur in Firefox, then there may be a conflict/bug within the Chromium engine being used.
Now we’re getting somewhere. Also – and I don’t know why I didn’t do this sooner – I went back to retest using my trackpad and sure enough I do see the same behavior. Issue occurs in Chrome as well. Seems to be specific to macOS/trackpad usage as the behavior doesn’t occur when using my wireless mouse nor does it occur in Windows (using trackpad or mouse).
Did some digging and found that this has been reported to the Chromium team a long time ago but was labeled as won’t fix:
Very strange that the issue would surface now given how old those reports are. Since I couldn’t find anything that matches the issue filed recently, I went ahead and opened an issue on our Github to see if our devs can fix the issue on our end or to reach out to the Chromium team to resolve the issue:
