Bookmark syncing only 1 way

My bookmarks all have names, so it can’t be that. I may try deleting the chain again and seeing if that will get it working.

Okay, I found a fix which worked for me:

I deleted the chain I’d started on my computer, and then started a new one. I scanned the QR code into my phone, which seemed to work there, but the status on my computer never changed from searching for the device.

I then deleted the chain again and instead started it from my phone, typing the word salad code into my computer. This worked immediately, and my bookmarks now appear in both places. I hope this helps someone in the future :slight_smile:

To summarize from what I read here and experienced for myself, I think the two main problems with syncing bookmarks at the moment are the following:

  • Unnamed bookmarks and folders do not sync to Android
  • Android bookmarks do not appear in a “mobile bookmarks” folder on desktop but rather on the bookmarks bar

These should be fixed because both are highly impractical and it’s obviously possible in Chromium (since it works in Chrome :sweat_smile:)

Good summary. The latest mobile version is out and still has these issues. Is there somewhere else we need to be raising them?

I can confirm that this issue is still exists, and wasn’t fixed yet.

Do you have a corresponding issue in the GitHub project?

Hi,

I am getting 2 way sync between multiple Windows machine, an Android Phone and Tablet. I am currently using the latest versions, (Windows - Version 0.62.51 Chromium: 73.0.3683.103 (Official Build) (64-bit), and Android 1.0.91).

All syncs had stopped, and I had to delete the sync chain from all devices (which took several attempts, delete the bookmarks from all but one windows machines, and all data from the Android devices. I then set up a new chain starting with my primary Windows PC that had a correct copy of the bookmarks.

Once done, all sync seems to work.

A major criticism of this is that this mechanism is not stable and very poorly constructed. I fully agree with earlier comments, specifically:

  1. The Mobile Desktop folder on Android is redundant
  2. New entries from Android always appear on the Bookmark Toolbar on Windows
  3. All bookmarks from Other Bookmarks on Windows appear at the top level within Android.

Since there are already many good examples of how to create a decent Bookmark sync capability (e.g. Chrome, Firefox etc) it is a real shame that Brave cannot produce a half decent capability.

This is so poor that I am really considering moving back to Chrome as Bookmark and other syncing is very important to me, and this is very poor and unreliable.

Is anybody from the Brave team actually looking into this?

Since code base is different on different platform we have some issues that is being reworked on. We understand the issue is frustrating and we are in process of a design refresh for sync so we should have a good solution in the future. The reported issues are definitely kept in mind for the next version of sync.

Please do report any other issues that anyone runs into it will only help make the next version better.

This issue remains in the most current versions of the Desktop Application and Mobile Application

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary):

  1. Set up sync on desktops
  2. Set up sync on android
  3. Wait for syncing to complete

Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):
Desktops sync bookmarks without loss or duplication.
Desktop bookmarks aren’t available on android.
Android bookmarks aren’t available on android.

Expected result:
Desktop bookmarks should be available on android
Android bookmarks should be available on adnroid

What is the amount of bookmarks that are being sync’d across devices?

Android bookmarks aren’t available on android.

Do you have more than one android device on the sync chain?

@sriram
I have less than 100 bookmarks being synced between 3 desktops (1 VM, 1 tower, 1 Laptop).
Only a single Android device is in the Sync Chain.

Are the bookmarks available on all the desktops? Is the Android device listed in the sync chain on desktop? If so can you try adding a random bookmark on your Android device and see if the sync works and it gets the other bookmarks?

Well, I just checked and the same problems still persist; namely unnamed bookmarks not syncing to Android and bookmarks sync not working very reliably in the first place (sometimes some of them sync, sometimes not.

I gotta say I am very happy that I didn’t wait any longer than I did for the devs to fix sync and implement more syncing features but rather have switched to Opera months ago. They have (afaik) all the features Brave offers (but working properly) and more.

It’s a bit sad that the focus seems (from what I can see) to be on the reward system rather than anything else, but I sincerely wish you all the best with the browser in the future :slight_smile:

My laptop died so lost my bookmarks on my Brave browser but it was synced with my android tablet, so I have my bookmarks there. The sync function is not working atm but I am wondering if I can save bookmarks in a file from my android brave browser and then upload the file on my desktop Brave browser?

Any help is appreciated as I need my bookmarks on my laptop.

@trustowl2.crypto,
Not at this time, but we do plan on implementing this feature in future releases. Apologies for any inconvenience.

can you suggest anyway I can retrieve my bookmarks from my android to my desktop?

@trustowl2.crypto,
At this time no, unfortunately. We do have an open issue to include this feature as I said – you can track the progress of the issue here:

I’ve also added your report to the thread as a +1 on your behalf.
