[Android] Forward button in 3-dot menu incorrectly replaced by Back button (when bottom toolbar is disabled)

Description of the issue:

After the 1.96 update on Android, the “Forward” button located in the 3-dot menu has been incorrectly replaced by a “Back” button. This bug only occurs when the toolbar is set to the top of the screen (i.e., the bottom navigation toolbar is disabled in the settings). Prior to this update, the menu correctly displayed the Forward button.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open Brave on Android.

  2. Go to Settings > Appearance and ensure the Enable bottom toolbar option is disabled so the toolbar appears at the top.

  3. Visit a website and click on any link to navigate to a new page.

  4. Press the system/device “Back” button to return to the previous page.

  5. Tap the 3-dot menu in the upper right corner to attempt to go forward again.

Actual result:

The menu displays a “Back” arrow button instead of the expected “Forward” arrow button.

Expected result:

The menu should display a “Forward” arrow button, allowing the user to navigate forward to the page they just backed out of. The browser shouldn’t need a dedicated back button in the menu since Android uses system-level back navigation.

Additional Information:

It appears this bug was introduced as a result of issue #59205. In that request, the user mistakenly asked for a “backward” button instead of a “forward” button for the top-toolbar layout, and the implementation seems to have overwritten the forward navigation entirely.

Thank you for reporting this. I’m seeing the same thing. I’ve added to the issue you opened and edited the issue to include some more relevant labels.
