Various issues with media (FB-reels, Youtube, streaming sites)

Winver: 26220.9223

Brave: 1.93.138
Chromium: 151.0.7922.173

Description of the issue:
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Facebook Reels give the error "Sorry, we’re having trouble playing this video." when interacting with the streaming options (volume, pauze, full-screen, etc)

  2. Youtube gives the error “Problem with audio playback program. Restart your computer” in random moments, often preceded by buffering issues, resolution downscaling, greyish overlay.

  3. Various “grey” websites with streaming content give the message that the video was not found.

  4. Edge works perfectly (but I don’t want to have to use it).

Additional Information: The issues seem similar to multiple threads about Brave 1.89.xx I’ve found on the community board.

Do you have any extensions installed in the browser at this time?

I’ve got a volume controller, uBlock origins lite, Bitwarden and the Adobe Acrobat plugin. All of them installed a long time ago, before the issues started.

Brave itself has an issue with YT to this day and it’s been going on for multiple months and many users have reported on it with the team basically ignoring the reports and not fixing them.

I tried watching a YT video without any adblocker nor shields after the most recent Brave browser update today. Still getting the error message ‘An error occurred. Please try again later.’ with the grey/blank video issue, and I even tested YT without any extensions or anything with a private window, and still getting the error message, all videos are pretty much just unplayable. It’s been happening for many months now.

@TheAGames10 I’m watching Youtube right now, ad free, on one of my monitors. It also appears to be working just fine on iOS, Android, Win11 and my Linux VM. This is not an issue of something “wrong with” or “broken” in the browser. This is typically caused by Google (youtube) changing/adjusting/updating their ad-block detection or implementing some account-level restriction when ad blockers are detected (which I suspect may be the case for you). Please read here:

@Muppet can you please try opening a Guest profile (Menu > More tools > Guest profile), close your original profile window, then see if these issues reproduce in the guest window? Additionally for sites like Youtube, can you test [in the guest window] while you’re logged into your account and also when you’re not logged in?

That’s interesting… When playing a video from another streaming site in guest mode, the video wants to start (full video time is shown along with the menu (subtitels, settings, volume, etc) but pauzes immediately) where as in my profile the message “Video not found” is given. The exact same link works in Edge, with no problem.
I haven’t tried Youtube, because the problem can occur immediately or after a couple of hours.
I don’t think it’s relevant, but I’m already working on a second profile, due to an earlier problem with my primary profile (Suddenly kicked out of every Google Service on Brave and not able to login again)

Can you share the other site you’re referring to?

My assumption here is that the error you’re seeing is tied to your account in some way. It works in Edge because you’re on a different browser without an ad-blocker and I suspect that you will end up getting the same error (though it may take a bit of time) when using Edge or any other Chromium-based browser with ad-blocking software installed.

I’m not sure it’s completely legal, and I don’t want to frustrate the forum. Can I send it in a DM type of way to you?

@Muppet absolutely – just sent you a DM.

And answered with the link

So fmovies works for you if you’re not signed into your account but if you sign in it throws the error message. Can you share a screenshot of the specific error message you’re seeing?

Additionally, if you could also visit the site, select content to watch but before playing it, open the dev tools console window (Menu > More tools > Dev tools [Console]), then click “play” and then share any output displayed in the Console window (you can just take a screenshot of it if that’s easier) that would be very helpful.

Regular profile

And as opposed to yesterday the guest profile does play the video now.

It’s perhaps difficult to see, but when I press the resume button in the yellow line on top of the video it opens a new VM## in the console screen.

Fully wrong. You do not even read messages. I literally have said that I am unable to 2watch YT in a private window, which means no shields, no extensions, and no adblockers in any capacity, the issue still persists, meaning this is something from Brave and NOT the shields or any kind of adblocking.

I just had the Youtube error again (left-hand side). After starting the 3rd video in a row the error came up. I opened guest mode and tried to watch a video in the guest profile. That’s on the right-hand side. That plays without an issue.

I did read your message. A private window does not mean “no shields, extensions, or ad-blockers”. Shields are still enabled yb default when you open a private window, and you can have any extensions running in private windows if you so select. This isn’t actually relevant as I suspect you did not have extensions running in your private window, but it’s important to understand that simply opening a private browsing widow doesn’t automatically disable/“turn everything off”.

Additionally, for you, specifically maybe it’s not related to Shields/ad-blocking/etc. However, it’s hard to tell given that you simply jumped in on someone else’s thread, who is encountering a different issue than you are. Looking at your posts, you have also done this before.

If you want assistance with your Youtube issue, I’m more than happy to do so, but in order for us to do that, you’ll need to open your own thread and provide the information in the editor that has all of the relevant information about your issue, your setup, etc. so that we can sort out what may be the cause.

Please feel free to tag me in that thread once you’ve opened it.

@Muppet I’m forwarding this information tothe devs and digging around to see if I can find other causes. Just to confirm, if you sign into your Youtube account in the guest profile does it still work?

Do you have dual core processor? Video assigned to onboard gpu? Hardware accel turned on?

Try reinstalling your graphics drivers. Have been posting about this in other folks troubles.

Goodmorning, today the error in Youtube occured immediatly. I’ve tried my primary profile, guest mode and signed in on my Youtube account in guest mode. So the timing for the error is completely random.

I’m working on a SKIKK custom laptop with an Intel Core-I7-12700H with 64Gb RAM. I’ve got an Intel Iris XE and a RTX3060. I’m working with fully updated drivers for both. Tbh I’m not sure but I think my two 4K monitors (connected through ICYBOX docking station via Thunderbolt) are controlled by the onboard Iris XE and my laptop monitor via the RTX3060 (unfortunately. I’ve been told that that’s hardware, I can’t let the RTX control my external monitors)

I’m seeing similar issues with YouTube in Brave as well. Sometimes videos fail to load or show random playback errors even when no ad blocker is active. Disabling extensions one by one may help identify the cause, but it seems like the problem could also be related to recent Brave updates. Hopefully the team can reproduce it and find a fix soon.
