After I close the error window, the browser opens but it’s a little slower than before the update. Also, the icon is no longer orange and white but gray and white.

Our latest update (which we put out there for 2 hours today) upgrades folks from our old codebase (which we no longer support) to the newer codebase (“brave core”). As part of that update, it uses the installer you mention to install the new version
Since this didn’t work, I’d recommend just manually downloading the new version from brave.com:
https://brave.com/download
Once you download and install that version, you can use the Importer to pull in your bookmarks, settings, and more. You can open the importer by going to Settings and searching for “Import”. In the dropdown, pick Brave (old) and hit import

Had the same problem when prompted to upgrade from running installer.
Installer says stack overflow (not the discussion site):
Unhandled exception at 0x00007FF6F3791C90 in brave_installer_71_0_57_18.exe: 0xC00000FD: Stack overflow
Downloaded the setup program, successfully updated.
Note: I have the old version still running from my local AppData, Version 8.1.8.0 / Build 2018-10-04. Apparently local user install, not as system install. Same grey icon shown in process explorer. New version is running successfully as version 71.0.57.18 / Build 2018-11-29.
Shut down both brave old and new browsers.
Then restarted the new.
Then went to Hamburger / Bookmarks / Import settings / Brave (old).
Add/Remove programs shows old and new Brave. Will next remove the old.
