Description of the issue:
Todays update destroyed Widevine on macOS 10.15.1.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Update to version 0.70.123 Chromium: 78.0.3904.97 (official build) (64-bit)
  2. right after restart you’ll get a message that macOS can not guarantee that a Widevine file is not malware and suggests to delete that file.
  3. Even if you dismiss the suggestion and try to stream maybe Prime Video, you’ll get a message that Widevine is missing.
  4. Updating Widevine in “components” wasn’t successful.
  5. Delete Brave
  6. Try to re-install Brave, macOS states that the Brave-browser .pkg couldn’t be scanned by macOS, so macOS won’t open the install-package.
  7. At least a right-click on the .pkg-file helped to install Brave again.

Now it’s working without a Widevine-issue.

Expected result:
The update shouldn’t make such problems!

Hi @steeven and thanks for the reply. I’ve learned something by having a look at the “workaround” provided by Rafael Ebron on github. I didn’t know about a possible exception via « Systems Preferences -> Security and Privacy -> General » so I had to go for a fresh install.

Workaround Windows 10:
Go to brave://components and then click Check for updates under Widevine Content Decryption Module

There may have been a bad version of Widevine pushed (for sure there was on macOS, see #6836), but it may be fixed now. https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/6859
