Sidebar Web Panel Feature

And honestly tell me about it, I am from Australia and I would love to watch the Australian ABC live (not to be confused with American ABC) (as I find news entertaining, the only issue is that it can cause stress depending on the topics most of the time, but I have a solution for that, I take a break and come back. I am a pretty calm person in real life) and have social media such as Facebook (I am on every social media) on the sidebar opened.

Worrisome Update: (this just means that I or the people here are starting to worry without any update since it’s been so long without one, like opening a new issue on the web panel’s to do list, etc etc) I asked Simon Hong if he’ll open the next issues soon Load new tab to panel view and make it persisted and Web panel item also should be activatable) because it’s been weeks almost without any update. I am, and we are not, pushing Simon to hurry, but it’s pretty sad we haven’t heard in a while. I am still very excited for web panel. If simon responds, I will show the response; if nothing then well, sadly we will have to wait…

Some sort of disappointing update: He responded. That is why, that was fine he was busy with other issues, just super confused, but we can relax now guys. It was good I asked for an update because many of us were starting to worry not gonna lie.

Good update: Agustin/Agus on X/Twitter said Simon will go back to that as soon as possible.

He then said, ‘Happy birthday! (for back then) Sorry I missed it, we were all trying to make webpanels a birthday gift for you, I guess it’ll be a belated present.’. That is really sweet of him! (https://x.com/aguscruiz/status/1968453051355738184)

Slight update: Brave has once, again, confirmed that they’re working on this on Elon Musk’s X:

Unrelated, but handy update about something else Sidebar related: So now Brave wants to look at making the sidebar apps sync across devices. ABOUT TIME! This will help those who get a new desktop and use the same sync chain and still get all the sidebar apps. Took long enough  This even excite me (I am the type of person that gets excited about ANYTHING).

See here: https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/49641

So yeah  not just Sidebar bookmarks: they want to bring Stats from NTP (new tab page like trackers, ads blocked, etc) to devices. YAY!

Not an update, but it’s now been exactly a month since the last issue on the web panel feature. Wow. I pray Simon continues on with it soon as Agus said earlier

Good update: Simon Hong said this issue (unrelated to web panel, but sidebar related)
https://github.com/brave/brave-core/pull/31473 will help the side panel improve. No word on when he’ll continue, but good he’s fixing sub issues to eventually go to web panel!

Slight Clarification sort of update: I asked Simon Hong what did he mean by his next issue in his To Do List ‘Load new tab to panel view and make it persisted’ and he said:
’It means that web panel is still opened (persisted) even user change active tab. and yes it’ll be closed only via user action.’
I personally find this as an amazing thing to work on so the web panel forms very well, kudos (alternative to well done, cheers or whatever) to him!

Update: Simon Hong believes that also having a minimize button would be handy as well! I bought it up to him, which I am glad. Because what if you want the sidebar panel to be used later on but without closing it, you can minimise it and reopen it to your will…

This is how the minimise button appeared on Edge by the way:

Huge update: the next part of web panel begins! WOO HOO!! But this time he added a new issue in his to do list called ‘Pinned tab for web panel should not be syncable’ whatever that means. (https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/33533#:~:text=Pinned%20tab%20for%20web%20panel%20should%20not%20be%20syncable)

Next issue see here:

This is so good, when it releases in nightly after every subissue of the Web Panel is done I will change the heading of this ‘(SOON) Sidebar Web Panel’ to ‘(RELEASED IN NIGHTLY) Sidebar Web Panel’ I was originally going to do ‘(RELEASED) Sidebar Web Panel’ but just ‘Released’ alone will confuse some people, and putting the specific version of Brave. I.E (example, e.g.): Nightly, Beta and Stable then it’d be more professional instead of just ‘RELEASED’ (which will only appear when it’s in Stable than Nightly and Beta; these are two seperate builds alone). Hope that makes sense.

I asked Simon what did he mean by this on the Web Panel and I am awaiting a response. I am confused by this as well… Don’t panic, the legend himself has the answer. Why? Because I think this new issue in the To Do List called ‘Pinned tab for web panel should not be syncable’ interferes with this (https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/49641) but we’ll wait for his reply. The next update about this or the next part of the web panel will be below)

Slight update: simon has also opened another issue to the web panel. Wow he’s doing a lot on it!

It is called ‘Loaded tab contents in web panel’. It’s a draft, there’s even a video that shows he managed to load the web panel inside the sidebar, but with no buttons. So proud of him it’s getting closer. here’s the vid:
Still in progress, but hey. We are getting closer…

Note: THIS IS A DRAFT, it may look different when it’s released, but at least the web panel functionality is the same.

We are currently waiting for this now regarding https://github.com/brave/brave-core/pull/31547 which is a draft I know, but it’ll resolve https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/49794 - He’s acting really fast. You’re a legend Simon!

Update: That issue will be closed after an approval https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/49794

The pull request: https://github.com/brave/brave-core/pull/31547 (it’s a draft, but still helps to progress on the development of it)

Update: still working on this before he gets approval, https://github.com/brave/brave-core/pull/31547 , in order to go to the next issue on his to do list. (https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/33533)

Late update: Simon is now fixing something relating to the Web Panel! This is great, since it says ‘Web panel’ in it. It got approved even. This one solves https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/50144 . GLAD this will help web panel. Simon is our hero guys!

Appreciation: I have reached 100 posts here, that is insane. No matter the number, I will always provide updates until it releases in every Brave Build. Thank you for being amazing people guys even if you’re not engaging with me here :), I appreciate it.

Quick update: this has been completed almost an hour after I posted it. That was fast!

Simon is still working on this! VERY GOOD! Soon approval for this one, then completed.
