Sidebar Web Panel Feature

Simon Hong, the legend himself finally responded!

Update: The Sidebar upgrade is still in Brave’s roadmap.

Update: Still in development, no ETA.

UPDATE: Brand new picture of it looking exactly like Edge’s! @aguscruiz said ‘It’s pretty standard’. Honestly, not a big deal, as it’s in development and it 100% looks like Edge’s.

Mini-Update & Appreciation: As I have noticed, look at the image of it two years ago (2023)

Comapred to now, August (In Australia, it’s August 1st now) 2025

You can see they made lots of progress, because in the 2023 image, there was no Brave Shields support, as well as no back and exit buttons as it’s obviously seen.

So yeah, I do not mind an estimate time of arrival (ETA) of the feature, but it’s clearly obvious that it’s development is still underway because they made lots of progress in the past 2 years. Quite impressive! Keep it up, Brave Team!

Regards,
Zeus

– For those wondering:
I apologise if this part wasn’t an update like the thing right above it, it’s just a thing you guys should notice, and go like ‘Wow’ when looking at it. It’s just mindblowing

Simon, did say to me that it has a prerequisite issue and after that he could start it, well guys. You never know: he could refer to "Brave Shield’ support in Sidebar Web panel, which is now accomplished in August 2025

@chrishanelloyd Sorry for the long wait to reply mate, but good news. As seen in this image, Brave Shield support has been added to the Web panel and here is how it’ll look like. They made amazing progress in that short time!

While, I won’t know the ETA myself, it’s nice to see Brave Shield support finally in it

Chris, if you can’t spot the Brave Shield icon in the sidebar panel then it’s right here

Update: Still in development

Would love to have this feature so that we can use AI tools like ChatGPT while working on different things, e.g., Google Sheets. There are many other use cases like this.

Split-view option is time-consuming; having a quick sidebar panel will be really helpful.

Absolutely! Not just with AI, anything! Messages like Facebook Messenger for example. If you need to message your friends on the sidebar with youtube opened in the main tab while watching a video, it’ll be possible  I am personally very excited @namaserajesh

I am sorry, but I do not know when it’ll come out as I do not work at Brave. @simonhong is the one doing development for this mostly, and he’s amazing! The latest screenshot with shields support added means it’s coming together nicely!

What photo? This one:

You can see shield support here:

And @namaserajesh thank you for heart reacting to every post about it  If you want to get updates regarding it, all you need to do is scroll to the very bottom and change it from ‘muted’ to ‘watching’. You’d get an email whenever I provide any updates

HUGE UPDATE: A legend named @namaserajesh (Rajesh) went on Twitter/X and said ‘Brave Leo AI Chat opens smoothly inside the sidebar; nice and compact. But if we add another website shortcut to the sidebar, clicking it opens in a normal browser tab, not the sidebar. So it loses that sidebar convenience. I am waiting for a useful sidebar update.’ which 100% refers to the sidebar upgrade to resemble how it looks like on Edge, opening sites on the sidebar as a Web View, not in a new tab.

and then in the replies it says ‘BrendanEich has at mentioned (@) rebron for ETA (Estimate Time of Arrival)’. Well, we did it guys! it’s sooner than later!

Rajesh (@namaserajesh), this message is from me:

I would like to say a huge thank you to you for commenting and then getting a reply from the CEO himself. This is my most wanted feature for Brave, and will be my most used!

Link to Brenan at mentioning rebron: https://x.com/BrendanEich/status/1955994238128414974

Since all of this was a huge update (how was it huge? Well asking rebron for the ETA is a huge step!) we all should thank @namaserajesh ! Thank you mate, you’re a real one. If you didn’t write that comment, I don’t think we’d ever know the ETA.

Slight Update: Agus posted the sidebar upgrade image on his Twitter/X account, having over 12,000 views.

Update: A YouTuber has made a video mentioning how that Brave’s sidebar doesn’t open sites to the side, resembling Microsoft Edge’s sidebar.

Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrxhVA5NVQ4

Part where she mentions it: https://youtu.be/YrxhVA5NVQ4?si=i3P3EVnlk3tXq80b&t=574

What she says (for those who can’t hear/deaf): ‘You have the sidebar over here that opens bookmarks or reading lists and other Brave products right in the sidebar. But if you add a new website or app to it, it just acts like a quick access button that opens the site in full screen, not the sidebar. Wow, I wonder where I got the impression that it might do that. And the settings icon just takes you to the settings page with the word sidebar being searched and going through this I can see that there’s no way to add a new section like downloads or history to open in the sidebar. This seems like such wasted potentinal’

HUGE UPDATE: According to Rebron on X, the Brave team is finalising the side-by-side feature, enabling the upcoming Sidebar Web Panel to support full browsing capabilities.

A huge thank you to @rebron for this

*Note: Because of this, I will change the (ONGOING UPDATES) heading to (NEAR-RELEASE) because a few weeks isn’t far away! But the change of title will not stop me from providing updates. I will provide updates until it releases in every Brave build!

We are this close, guys!*

Update: Rebron has confirmed to me that he’ll also fix the Brave sidebar apps not syncing across devices  Amazing guy!

My pleasure, I’m also eagerly waiting for this feature.

 Well, the wait is almost done because as Rebron said earlier, ‘a few weeks to Nightly’ that could 100% mean it’ll be out in Nightly in a few weeks, maybe like a late September to early October ish release time
Brave works really fast on new features and fixing bugs, so we’d might get it even sooner than that, you never know

Update: I was right! It’s now as a feature flag (I do not see it, i’ll let you guys know once I see it)

Update: If you go to https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/44958#issuecomment-3218554352 you will see that Simon closed it as completed, it is not, he was meant to close it as not planned. DO NOT FRET! This does NOT mean the development is cancelled. It just means the sidebar web panel will be added using Side by Side (brave’s new split view) instead of split view (how the old web panel worked). And yes when I said WHAT! in caps, I did get a bit frightened haha

UPDATE: IT HAS BEEN COMPLETED AND THE FEATURE IS GOING TO COME AS A FLAG in BRAVE://FLAGS

@namaserajesh WE DID IT MATE! CLOSER AND CLOSER!
